Hi! I just want to get a feel of how difficult is the med school and residency. I guess what Im trying to find out is: “is it possible to go through med school and residency with kid?”

I have 5 month old baby right now and will probably apply for next next cycle. Of course Im just talking in the best case scenario - getting into med school on same cycle. If I do, my baby will be around 2-3yrs old. By the time Im done with school, she will be 6-7yrs old. And end of residency, she will be around 10-11yrs old. Again, Im just talking from best case scenario.

Throughout the journey, I want to be able to have some bonding time (at least 1-2 hrs) with my baby and be able spend a day with her during weekend. Will that be possible while Im in medical school and during residency?

I want to pursue obgyn for the residency. I heard residency is vary by speciality. So My top choice is OBGYN.

I want to be able to hear many perspectives. Any input would be extremely helpful.

Thank you in advance!!

I’m only an applicant this cycle but have spoken to lots of current med students. What I have gotten from them is your experience will be entirely dependent on yourself (and to an extent, the program you attend). I’ve been told the preclinical years are a little more time flexible, some schools don’t mandate attendance at lectures so you can do a lot of studying at home. Rotations and studying for exams are where it might be tough, especially if you have a kid, but it’s all about choices and budgeting your time well. It’s what you make of it.

Residency is undoubtedly difficult but I think if you have a supportive SO or family who can pick up extra responsibilities then you’ll be able to make it work. If you want it that bad then go for it! All things are possible if you plan ahead and make good choices 🙂

There were a handful of folks in my class who had kids during medical school (1-2 babies), both men and women. To say the least, it was challenging to balance clinical duty hours, studying and family time. What you will need is a strong support system to help watch your child, such as a partner or family, or have the means to hire a nanny. Even as residents, they are able to raise a family. It's possible!
