I'm starting physics this quarter. I am very scared of it! What should I expect? I did well in all my math classes, but I am not naturally good at math, if that makes sense. Any advice?

Which series? 6 or 1? 6 should be cake...try to take waung. for the most part if you can do the homework and can understand the concepts as well(which shouldn't be hard) you'll be fine.

if you're taking the 1 series tho...well...have fun...hehe.

Oh and if you have waung(or any prof similar to waung) make sure to get hold of the practice midterms from covel tutoring. i amassed quite a collection of old waung midterms when i was tutoring for them the past 2 years. so the current 6a tutor will probably be busting those old exams out for midterm review packets.

if the prof is durian....drop the class now! durian sux!!! i think he prides himself in being an a$$ and making people do poorly. even some of the best covel and aap physics tutors had trouble with his physics questions.

Physics at Duke is like stabbing your eyes out with a rusted nail....best of luck!

It made you want to marry your mother? 🙂

Physics aint got nothing to do with marrying your mother. I think that would had happened w/o the help of physics. I think this is called Oedipus Complex?😛 😀

Oedipus Rex killed his father, married his mother and then stabbed his eyes out 😱

I think it depends on how the tests are. I have seen some profs who emphasize conceptual over working otu problems and often these get tricky and are quite tough even when u know the material but if it is problem based then it is a matter of doing a ton pr practice problems. Either way its all about doing many many problems over and over, that will help u understand and get good at the calculatoins and ues of 4mulas.. its not bad ifu put the time in! good luck

Take Rudnick if you can for 6B and go to his office hours and he will basically do your homework!

I totally agree! I had Waung for 6A and Durian for 6B. Waung made it so easy to understand and Durian loved finding the hardest stuff possible to put on the tests. Also, even though the labs seems like a waste of time, sometimes they are helpful for seeing practical applications of the equations you learn in class.

I am taking 6A. I have a new professor (Abachi). At least, he isn't rated at UCLAProfessors.com. I don't know why I am not understanding it. Today the prof went over all of this abstract vector stuff that went completely over my head. I think I am going to sign up for Covel tutoring today. I feel hopeless right now.

Oh, and I forgot the best part... no curve! 🙁

You never know what to expect from new profs...but no curve is usually a good sign in the physics dept. It probably means his midterms aren't all that difficult. Waung never really had a curve either because people would consistently score above 90, some even getting perfects or getting like a 105 because of an extra credit problem. In fact, I think if waung "curved" it in a true sense that it would actually hurt people who got above 90.

Oh another piece of advice...when signing up for covel tutoring try to put down the tutor's last session(or the tutor's last session before the day your hw is due) as your first choice. By a tutor's last session they have usually heard all the hard questions from their previous sessions and know exactly what problems to address in the later ones. Also last year Melissa Clark and I were the 6A tutors. So if she is doing it again this quarter(i dunno if she graduated or not or if she is still doing physics 6A) then she's been through the class several times already. I dunno who the new hires are. Maybe they are better. Your call....but just so you know Melissa has done physics 6A b4 so already has experience with the common problems people have with physics.

Last time I use a literary reference on SDN. 😛

My tutor's name is Veronica, I think. I ended up having to sign up for the first session, due to my schedule. I wanted to go to my prof's OH today, but he wasn't there! Not good...

I am hoping that between the tutoring and office hours and studying my tail off that I can make sense of this class. I think I will be okay... today was just so bad. 🙄

Physics is my worst science. Back in the Dinosaur era, when I was in High School, these were my standardized science scores: 98% in Bio, 91% in Chemistry and 80% in physics. I was jumping for joy for that 80 and had no idea how I got it.

Physics in College was very, very bad.

I believe motivation has a lot to do with the grades you get. In this internet age, there is so much help--SDN is a perfect example. There are online tutorials, forums, books. I am optimistic that both of us will do well in our Physics classes, which I am taking this semester, by the way.

Veronica is a new hire....prof OH are good...don't forget about TA OH's too!

I hated Physics so much when I took it my sophomore year.

At my school, (UC Santa Barbara) our insane bio department makes sophomores take Intro Bio(4 days a week at 8am), Organic Chem, and Physics all year long, all at THE SAME TIME.

It was pure hell. You had to do it to stay on track with your major, and trust me it wasn't fun.

Physics is hard, but I found it manageable. I definately like Bio and Chemistry over Physics, but if your classes are curved, I don't think you have that much to worry about.

i know what u mean. i go to uni of the pacific and a lot of our science teacers are like that (bio, chem, physics)

Hey silver_eyes, you go to UOP??

Hey I'm from Stockton, and I was really close to going there. How do you like the school's science departments?

The reason I didn't go was because UOP was mostly a liberal arts school, and I wanted to get away from home.

Whoops...forgot to add that it is still very possible to get an A in his class. One just has work a bit harder at it compared to Waung. But thats how college is...Some profs are harder than others. There are still people in Durian's class that get A's so it is very do-able. My point was that if you had a choice you wouldn't have to work as hard with waung and wouldn't have the frustration of being curved to low averages.

I'm sure you've read her 12 page thread...haven't you?

No, I haven't.

Where is it?

LOL. stop it. come on. get over it. i seriously tired to deleted that damn thing like several times and it kept on saying, "error." argh.

anyway, their science department sucks. like, bio, chem and physics alll have their share of bad ass professors, who purposely make the classes hard for no damn good reason...maybe to boost up their egos. they have the hardest questions on exams. You hardly EVER get to finish an exam.

i had genetics this semester ( i ended up dropping it and will take it with a different teacher this semester) and the second test was REALLY long. 12 Multiple choice and like 10-15 LONg answer problems. NOBODy ina class of 70 finished it. he was like "im leaving in 2 minutes with or without your tests" i was like OMG OMG OMG! I was freaking out and i had 3 pages more to go. some guy only did the multiple choice and left. the teacher wasnt very approchable either, but his wife is a sweetie.

cool. i would love to go to UCLA. i heard competition is cut-throat there though. hehe.
