Given everything else on app is good (high STEP scores, honors, research, letters) would you still have a slim chance of matching into competitive field. Does preclinical failure automatically eliminate you from consideration? Any advice from students/doctors who have actually experienced this would be helpful.

You would certainly have a chance. Pre-clinical classes are the last thing that anybody's looking at on your residency application. I know people who failed pre-clinicals and went on to do very impressive specialties. The more important thing is to identify the reason you failed and fix your study strategies so that it doesn't carry over to Step 1 or your clinical rotations!
