Good LOR.

Notes to mention which may be significant:

Ever since I moved from Jamaica, my entire freshman yr was very bad, having 2Ws and 2Ds. One D was for Bio100L but I retook and got an A. Other D I got in Calc.
One W in Bio303/Cell bio (Registered my 2nd Semester!!! What was I THINKING)
Other W in Engl comp? retook and got a B. I retook Genetics and 1st semester phys 111? improving from a C to a B in Bio302 and C to an A in Phys 111.
YUP guys that?s my freshman semester for you, I finished with a ~1.90 GPA

Sophomore yr MUCH better with B?s and As? finished with a ~3.4
Junior and Senior yrs with ~3.7GPA.

Even though my freshman yr showed a lack of focus etc, it was a real wake up call? and I believe I am strongly motivated now.

On the other hand? what if I took some time off to help my family financially though, how would schools react to that (by then I will be 29)? My parents are trying to establish themselves in the US (We immigrated from Jamaica and are now permanent residence and school has been expensive especially with the house that they got (with bills etc).

Anxiety is mostly what I feel now, there is no way I can help them out with finances and go to medical school at the same time.

Advice from anyone who had to go through such issues etc? is it some what of a risk to take 2-3yrs of working (saving up money, gaining life experience, and contributing to family finance ?

Any advice would get greatly appreciated, thank you

Your gpa is good, your mcat is excellent. with your emt experience, you are very competitive for DO programs. You are competitive for most MD programs as well. I wouldn't worry. You will go to med school when and most likely where you want. I wouldn't worry about your freshman year. You show an upward trend which is important. Don't "slum" and go to DO school. If you want to be a DO, then go to DO school. Your stats are good enough to go to many MD schools. Choose the school that fits you.

Good luck

Hey! I completely agree with the previous poster - your chances are great for wherever you want to go! In response to taking a year off, I would definitely go for it. From what I here, once you're in, everything's non-stop till you're done with residency. You might fee more settled and ready to get started if you take care of things at home and feel more relaxed. I'm glad I didn't apply straight from college because it really helped me as a person

Which part of Jamaica are you from? I've lived in Portmore, Spanish Town, Ocho Rios, and Kingston. I miss it a lot.

BTW, with your MCAT score being so high you'll be in great shape. I wouldn't sweat a thing.

Big up.

Take that year off. If you're interested in helping your family out during that time - try hard to do something medically related - like being an EMT! I loved my year off. Plus, you're not conflicting school with filling out secondaries, essays, interviews, etc. Good luck, but you don't need it.
