I live in WA and am trying to figure out how I can find an apartment at VCOM without having to pay for a ticket and fly out there. The VCOM website has postings for people looking for roommates but I was hoping to live by myself. If anyone has suggestions I would appreciate it. Thanks.

It all depends on whether you are single or married with kids. If you are single- I would suggest somewhere in Christiansburg as it is cheaper. Kids- you will want Blacksburg since they have a MUCH better school system. You will easily be able to afford living in a nicer place in C-burg if it is just you. IM me at penthaselia on AIM and I will give you more info. Or email me at [email protected].

If I understood Megan correctly as she gave us our tour of Blacksburg, the school has pre-paid living arrangements for students coordinated at all out-of-town rotations. The cost of these pre-paid quarters is part of our tuition. Is that correct? Thanks.

Yes- for your 3rd and 4th years. But I was speaking for your first 2 years where you will have to cover your living expenses. Plus- if you decide to rotate at the hospital in Blacksburg (which is my recommendation, as it is awesome)- you will want to have a place set up which is both affordable and fairly close.

Sorry cyclegirl if I am hijacking your thread but it's the same topic. Can anyone suggest an area that may have cheaper townhouses or duplexes with a fenced backyard? I have a dog that I would love to let her have a backyard to run around if the price is reasonable. Thanks! And do you guys have any suggestions on specific apartment complexes that are quiet, nice, and affordable?

Watch out for cheap apartments in Blacksburg. It's a college town and if it's cheap, lots of undergrads probably live there and it can be loud (especially the night before or of a football game). Don't get me wrong, I loved Blacksburg, but I don't miss waking up at 2:30am every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night when the drunk students are loudly stumbling home (but to their credit, most of the kids do tend to walk home from the bars, rather than try to drive). When looking for an apartment, look for places that don't allow undergrads or that are a little more expensive than the typical places (like Terrace View or the undergrad part of Foxridge, where many students live and there are a lot of loud parties). I don't mean to be rude (I was an undergrad there and I like to think I didn't bother anyone), but it's just a suggestion. You might have to pay a little more, but I think it's probably worth it. The only truly quiet place I ever lived in Blacksburg was a nice townhouse on Lora Lane (affordable w/ roommates). I even rented a house once with some roommates and it was loud because our neighbors had parties in their backyard several times a week during the summer.

I spent some time looking on the web and asking around and decided to spend the extra money and rent at Knollwood. The convenience of being across the street and so close to the VT campus was too inviting.

I looked through the FA budget and tried to find things that I could cut (such as cable TV) in order to make it work out. The drawback is that you need to apply now and submit a $200 deposit with your application and have to wait to find out if you will have a place.

I am thinking that a place at Knollwood combined with a meal plan at VT should help reduce some of the hassles associated with commuting, cooking, cleaning, shopping etc.

I signed a lease with Cedarfield.... It seems to have everything Knollwood has, but older and cheaper. I am from MI, so I never had a chance to look at places. All i had to work from was pictures on the internet.

For all you current students, does anyone live in Cedarfield? I am just living alone, and not too picky. I just like the washer/dryer in each apartment!

Does anyone know if The Mill at Blacksburg is a nice place. I am in a similar predicament as cyclegirl (sorry cycle for putting this in your thread). Also, does anyone know of a male that is looking for a roomate (non smoker). Thanks, Mark
