For anyone who has done some elective or program internationally (CHFI, etc) do you have any ideas on funding? I think a rough estimate will put my bill at around $3K to $4K.

Did you solicit friends and relatives? Scholarships, grants? I'd appreciate any pointers and/or leads. Thanks.

try your school's "international house/office"-like administration department for funding you may be eligible to apply to.

does anybody know of any good reputable international programs that are still accepting applications? i don't really have much preference in location.

it's always a messy search but if you go to amsa.org you can search opportunities. i'm going through "CFHI" (www.cfhi.org) and click on international experiences or something - all the locations seem very dynamic and different. i know a few of them are "reputable" enough to give all students emergency cell phones for the duration of the trip. there is a $35 application fee and the program fee is kind of pricey but i guess thats what happens when the program is so well coordinated.

Hi..I spent my summer off in Cambodia doing Pedi HIV research on an Elizabeth Galser Pedi AIDS grant....

1. Talk to professors at your schoold doing international work. If there aren't any, go to a school nearby that does. Schools with big int research are Harvard, Brown, Tufts, UCLA, Standford, and many others. Lots of times the school will have small summer grants or the researcher themself might put you und their grant funding.

2. Look at the AMSA website (www.amsa.org)

3. Fogarty Ellison grants (google search it or talk to your deans)

4. Pick a topic e.g HIV/AIDS--look at the Elizabeth Glaser PEdi AIDS foundation or numerous others. e.g. Public health---look at the APHA home website. etc.....

5. Start NOW! you will need to have your stuff together by the end of Feb. to get grant applications in.

See if you can get people to donate airline miles for you to help pay for your plane ticket to your destination. I know some folks who are going to Africa this summer and they are getting people to chip in miles for them....
