I'm heading down to NC in a few weeks for some interviews. Does anyone familiar with the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area know the best way to get from Duke Med to UNC Med, that doesn't involve renting a car? I know there's a shuttle between the 2 undergrad campuses, but will that pick up/drop off close enough to where I want to be?

Thanks! 🙂

Banannie,

First of all congrats on the combo interview down there. I think you'll love Durham and Chapel Hill.

Though I am a grad of Duke (not in medical school there nor planning on it since Duke gave me the official alumni rejection 🙁 ) I know the area a little bit. You can take the Robertson Scholars Bus which runs all day between Duke and UNC. The Duke bus stop is right off the main quad, where the medical school rests off of. That bus takes you to the UNC Planetarium on Franklin Street. I don't know exactly where the medical school is at UNC, but I'm sure that it's not too far from there, I think it's a couple of blocks north of Franklin Street near the Dean Smith Center. Everything is pretty close once you get to Chapel Hill. The Robertson Scholars bus is free, just ask some of the undergrads waiting at the bus stop when it comes. I know it comes every hour, probably twice an hour at the very least if not more. But, make sure you get on that bus, and not an East-West or Central Campus bus, that'll just take you around the Duke campus.

Good luck! I hope this helps.

the med school campuses are on or next to the undergrad campuses at UNC. I don't know the details about the shuttle, but it would not be more than a 5-10 min walk if you are dropped off on the undergrad campuses at both schools. A cab might be an easy option too, as the schools are only about 10 miles apart.

I second the Robertson Scholars bus. A cab would be more expensive than you think. I spoke with an out-of-town Duke interviewee who got screwed on cab fare from the airport. Granted, they step up rates at the airport, but the fare was really outrageous, so I would take the bus if you have time. Good luck on your interviews!

Here is the schedule for the bus:

I love this bus - I'm told that while very drunk, I once toasted to it (at a house party w/ my close duke and unc friends)

At duke, you get off the bus and face the chapel, turn right and walk straight all the way up the quad till you run smack into the Davison building; walk into the double doors, go one floor down to the basement level and follow signs to the purple zone and ask someone where admissions is.

At UNC, the med school is a bit of a walk (more like 15-20min) from morehead planetarium where they drop you off. Doable if the weather is nice and you have comfortable shoes. Maybe catch a cab from the bus stop? (i'm not sure how frequent they would be though)

Congrats + Hope you have fun there!

The med school is pretty far from the Planetarium walking. But it's doable if it's nice. But what you can do is catch the U bus from the planetarium (there's a stop near there) and take it over to the med school. It's a nice 20 minute ride because it goes through campus before it circles back over there.

Or I guess you could walk over to Cameron Avenue and catch the RU bus and you'll be there a lot sooner...but that's more confusing. Just pick up a Chapel Hill Transit schedule when you get there. The bus is free, so that's really convenient. 🙂
