Can anyone help me?

I have this bad habit of spending lots of time on SDN. Especially when I am at home after work. At work if I am busy, I can ignore SDN.

How do I wean off this... is there something I can do. Nic patches, gum, anything? Maybe pick up smoking again, start drinking etc...

I would be very greatful if anyone has any suggestions. Medic170, yposhelley, Nate?? How did you guys do it?

Thanks

I used to do the same. Try this, (I know I did and it worked for me).
I actually have a one of those biometric security device attached to my server, set to identify my gf's finger print scan. That way, I can't login unless she lets me. I have cut down on my net time considerably. I read more, get out more and do other things that I otherwise avoided before.
Good luck.

haahahhhhh.. my girl friend would block my home PC, my labtop, my work computer.. and force me to sit and talk or pay attention to her. we already talk enough.. but she calls SDN... "talking to your friends!!!" I guess that is normal.. if she is doing something with wierd people on the net for hours a week.. I would be concerned.

From your avatar, I can infer that you already have a perfectly good addiction waiting for you on 3 seasons of DVD.

I think I have it worse. I check SDN right after I check my email. So...somewhere between 6-10 times/day. If I could have SDN updates sent to a blackberry, I would.

And I scan posts while at work too. I listen for anyone coming down the hall so I can quickly click out of it.

I need help!

I was away in DC for a few days last week and it was tough. I think heroin addicts in detox have an easier time than I did without SDN.

Hey man, I've got the same problem, and I have a virology test tomorrow.

2nd year of medical school seems to do it for many people--worked for me.

I still have relapses, but for the most part I am too freakin busy for anything but school and family.

If you stop posting, you won't have anything to check. I used to check a lot because I posted a lot and I wanted to see what people wrote in response.

Also, you will come to realize that the same threads keep showing up over and over and over and over and there really isn't much new being said, except for practical discussions like the combined match.

no more advice.. wow.. I guess those who succeed don't post anymore.

Wiat til you start takling to some of the post padders in the Lounch with 10K posts....you think you are addicted...talk to them. I think you're in good shape. :)

Docbill- I know you're in the 2009 class at UNECOM. Don't worry, as soon as anatomy starts you'll forget SDN even exists. Waste your time while it's yours to waste. See you when you get here!

JW.

I, too, am an SDN addict. I admit it. I check this forum after checking my email and read posts when I should be doing something more productive.

I was even surfing SDN during the Oscars! ahhhh...

I am actually doing pretty well with this now.. it has only been a week and a bit.

I just found other things more fun to do than post on here. I still check SDN about 5 times a day. I don't reply to crap posts that have anything to do with MD vs. DO, DO the great or current events. Someone posted earlier that the need to come on here deminishes when you see the same old crap over and over again... they where right.

I went to the gym instead... hmmm feels much better.

Hey docBill,
Don't be too hard on yourself for posting - you helped me a bunch with finding loans so thanks!

I cut off my arms so I have to use my nose to type and it takes so long it frustrates me. Damn you, there goes my whole Wednesday night.

Actually I was away on a trip to Honduras, Central America :)

My personal rule is only one vice at a time. So find a new one...like drinking, as you suggested.

I remember when I was on a cruise this summer in the Mediterranean, I couldn't keep myself from paying 50 cents a minute to check one or two threads on SDN after dinner, on the ship.

I also spent an hour in an internet cafe on Mykonos browsing SDN. And an hour in Santorini. Yes, while on vacation on beautiful Greek islands, I spent 2 hours of precious daylight (totally cloudless, beautiful sunny days) indoors, reading about what schools people were complete at.

The first step is admitting you have a problem...

 I hear you!

It got to the point for me where all I wanted to do when I got off work was chat on SDN for hours. It was driving my boyfriend crazy.

I don't know-I have been working out more -so when I get home I'm exhausted. Lately I have been watching Japanese animes late at night.

The less you post-the less you have to respond to-which sucks.

Hey-its not a bad habit-just as long as you aren't neglecting other important aspects of life (like person to person contact, working out, or some other hobby). Me, I don't have enough time in the day to play the piano, do yoga, jog three miles, chat on SDN and work a 15 hour day (which I often do), so like it or not-SDN started to fade from my life a little.

Plus the fact that nobody loves me around here. +pity+ I'm surprised you even noticed I was missing, Docbill. Just kidding! :p

Oh- and BY THE WAY- check out PsychoDoctor's posts-the guy joined a month before I did and already has 4000+ posts-so there are worse cases!!

Dido... I am trying to either block this site or piss off enough people that they would kick me out.

My name is Docbill, and I have a problem!

Hey at least it is not surfing the web for porn all day... Ohhh wait a sec. hehehehe

MODERATOR: Can we get rid of some of these stickies... or put them in one folder.. one main sticky. I have to scolll all the way down to get some of this addictive crack.

Did anyone see the documentary about Ronan Tynon? This guy is very motivational. I like his motto.. don't say one day I might.. go for it .. aim for the highest and do it.

Docbill, you are the height of just-too-muchery (vague reference?) :D
