You are supposed to be invincible. Being in a car crash or getting a serious illness only shows weakness.

Talk to your program director and explain your reason, you may be surprised how understanding they will be. I took a 3 month leave of absence near the end of my residency when my sister was undergoing a bone marrow transplant. I was allowed to come back and finish my last rotation afterward.

Depends on the reason. Noone expects you to work through getting cancer. But if you took a year off because of relationship issues, then you have a problem.
I have lupus and it has been getting worse with stress. I'm having a difficult time coping at the moment. :(
