IVF business

IVF practice is different to other medical specialties, Crawford says. "In other areas of medicine, you just pay for the doctors' hands-on time, and you can't leverage the skill base of the doctor," he says.

But in this business, "most of the work is not done by the doctor, it's done by the nurses and the scientists. You can leverage off that and add volume."

There may be other specialties involved behind the scenes but OB/GYNs do the aspiration of eggs and placement of embryos.

I couldn't handle the stress and tension of the patients, that's for sure. Almost every visit has an element of bad news and these patients want to know everything. "Why didn't the last two embryos reach 4 cells yet?" How come my follicles are only 12 mm? Last time they were 14 by this time" etc, etc.

From that specialty, I particularly remember a young couple who had aborted with twins at 5 months after succesful IVF (or ICSI, which is almost the same) and now they were back for more. You could just tell it was all they thought about.

But when it all works out and they send you Christmas cards for years, that's pretty cool, I imagine. 🙂

OB/Gyn then REI fellowship (reproductive endocrinology and infertility)

some people have tried going through medicine then endocrine. probably not a good idea.

In vitro fertilization is done by board certified OB/Gyn's (4 year program) with 3 additional years of reproductive endocrinology. Total training 7 years. Very difficult to get into REI training programs as this has become more popular probably from a monetary aspect. Most REI's also specialize in pediatric gynecology as well as medical genetics seeing those with infertility issues is the mainstain of practice.
