How does the AAMC calculate GPA?

So my school has the A/A- type of grading system, and I heard that the AAMC calculates GPA differently. Is an A- considered an A according to AAMC?

No, at least for the previous cycle A-'s were counted as 3.7 (A and A+'s were both 4.0).

No - A- is not an A. You can look on the AMCAS website but here is a chart from their site. An A- will be weighted as a 3.7

What I am sure you heard is that AAMC does not give you a 4.3 for an A+, which is true, in order to level the playing field since all schools don't do +/- grading, thereby making it impossible to receive an A+ at those schools. The effects of +/- grading even out for grades below A, so, as the table in the post above illustrates, they are calculated by AAMC as you would expect.
