I know there are only a few spots all over the country (Head/Neck, craniofacial, cosmetics). What does it take to get a spot? How in demand are they? Does an MD help in the selection process?

They are getting more and more popular in the last few years. Gone are the times when it didn't take much to get into one. MD helps. Coming from a solid program helps. Training at a program thathasa fellowship trained attending that is connected helps more than anything. Who you know becomes very important the farther you get in your training.

To get a spot, you need to complete OMFS training. The demand is not high. Having an MD is not required.

Thanks for the responses so far. What would give an edge to two applicants from top programs? Case load? Letters of rec? Are residents even in control of the cases they get to cut during their training in order to build a formidable case record?

How the interview goes counts a lot... They want to know if they could spend a whole year+ With you as their right hand guy. By the sound of it you don't need to worry much about this stuff for a while. Just do well in dental school first.
