like average step 1 score. Also, do you typically go into internal medicine and then subspecialize

Cardiology is a fellowship, not a residency. You'd have to Match/Scramble into Internal Medicine first.
 
As Blade said, cardiology is a fellowship of Internal Medicine. Fellowship programs tend to use slightly different criteria than residency programs. As an example, step 1 scores (or step 2 or 3 scores for that matter) are not nearly as important.
