How long does it take to get J1 visa

Hi, How long does it take to get the J1 visa stamp in your passport?

ECFMG have approved my application and I have finally received my DS-2019 form.
Now I have to take the DS-2019 form to a US embassy, who will give me the visa. Trouble is, that I'm on a 3 month vacation backpacking around Europe. If I go to a US consulate, London would be the best, how long will it take to get the visa approved?

Typically you get the visa stamped during your interview, but that assumes that you are a citizen of the country you are applying in. If they have to send for a background check with the consulate in your home-country, it could take 10 days or so.

Also, since 9/11 they have severely restricted the opportunities to obtain a US visa outside of your country of citizenship. Before you rely on it, check with the embassy/consulate in London whether they will give you a visa if you are not a UK citizen.
