Hi my name is "happylord2003", i really want to be a Cardiovascular Surgeon, i will working on my Associetes Degree in Biology next semester, my questions are:

1-How long does it takes from the day i put my feet in college to the day i gain my MS or MD(dont know wich) degree in Cardiovascular Studies?
(What about Phd?)

2-Is any Difference in salary between somebody with an MS/MD and somebody with an Phd?

3-What kind of field do you recommend me to work on college?
I mean with this is, that with an Associetes in Biology i cant work nowhere. How i can make the money to pay my school?

The field of cardiovascular surgery probably won't exist anymore by the time you get through med school. 🙂

happylord2003,

Chief resident is referring to the fact that many of the cardiothoracic surgery cases are being lost to other specialties (and less invasive procedures, etc)

But anyway, to answer your questions.
1. To get into medical school you will need a 4-year degree, bachelors of arts or sciences. Medical school is then 4 years. The field of cardiothoracic surgery is changing somewhat right now, but the usual way of getting there is to do a 5-year general surgery residency and then a 2-year fellowship in cardiothoracic. So all in all, this takes 15 years from the start of college to the end of fellowship. Some programs are now combining them into one 6-year program for CT surgery, which would make the total 14 years.

2. Not sure what you mean. You can't do CT surgery with just a PhD. And while I don't know for certain whether having a PhD or MS in addition to the MD would increase your salary, I doubt it.

3. Work wherever you can if you need the money. But try to get as much financial aid as possible while you are in college and med school.

FYI - an MS is a Master of Science degree typically received either in the first year or two of a PhD program or an independent Master's program; both of which are done after receiving a Bachelor's Degree from a 4-year college or university. You cannot practice medicine in the United States with an MS degree. As an American graduate, you need either an MD or a DO to practice medicine. This changes somewhat if you are a foreign medical graduate. For example, Australia grants an MBBS degree which stands for Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery, which is equivalent to our MD/DO degrees. There may be an MS degree granted from a college/university in another country which is equivalent to American MD/DO degrees. However, an MS degree granted in the United States is not sufficient to practice medicine. I hope that's not too confusing.
