for you docs, particularly female docs, how long would you wait till you start getting worried if aunt flow hasn't checked in? If I'm a day late, should I not freak out? Is a week enough to start worrying?

Not a doc yet, but a veteran of 3 pregnancies and 2 years of med school...
It depends...Are you on oral contraceptives? Sometimes it takes longer than others for Aunt Flo to come by, especially if you have recently switched. Are you normally like clockwork, or do you sometimes go a day or two early or late? Is there a specific reason to worry? Have you had any symptoms (breast tenderness, nausea, bloating, utter exhaustion) more than normal for this time of the month?
Have you been under stress? Sometimes that throws even very normal cycles off, as can bad eating habits or over-exercising. There are lots of reasons it can be late, but if you are truly worried and want to know, the pregnancy tests work this early (I came up positive once BEFORE aunt flo was due!). Just remember that even if it is positive, this early on as many as 30 percent of pregnancies don't make it.

Hope things work out for you...

Aunt Flo doesn't always mean there will be no neices or nephews. Had 2 pts who became pregnant on ocp's. And not everyone has obvious symptoms in their first trimester. Invest the $10 in peace of mind.

Vixen, I'm also on the pill and am always right on time on wednesday. A few times, I have been 1-2 days late. I wouldn't worry until you are 1 week late. Then take the test.

Vixen,
I was so stressed once that I didn't have my period for 5 months (my best friend died and she was my sister essentially). So, I know firsthand how stress affects your cycle. I was also on the pill when this happened. However just take the test to give you peace of mind if you still don't have your aunt flow by the end of the week.

I've been there. Why don't you buy a test that has two tests in one box? Since you are already late, you're 'eligible' to take the test and get an accurate result. But if you get a negative and still haven't started in a week, you can take the other one.

Woah Vixen, I am right where you are right now. I usually start today, tommorow at the latest and am on the pill. I think I'm going to go get a test after work today, b/c I've been wondering for the last week and a half. I'm probably psyching myself out, but I just feel funny.

any truth to a womans "intuition" about pregnancy?

Not a doc yet but from experience, excercise, stress, eating habits..all can contribute to a late visit from Aunt Flo.Do you normally get one every 24,25,26 or 27 days? I would not start worrying right away. I was over a week late once...of course the stress of waiting for my Dad's test results on his cancer did not help.
But I think anywhere from 6-10 days,I would seek medical advice on the delay.
Hope it all works out for you.

Vixen,
I've freaked out more than once about being a day or two late, and I am also on the pill (I really only worry about this if I've been on antibiotics or sick to my stomach in the previous month), but the stress from worrying about it can make it more late, in my experience!!! Do something for yourself, that gets your mind off of it. I always share my worry with my BF, and he helps me get my mind off of it and things are always fine, just me being a worrier. My thoughts are with you, take some "me" time and relax!

There are a few clues that can tell you if you are pregnant, but of course they differ with everyone. My mom once told me that she and my sister could always tell they were pregnant by two clues even before they missed their periods. One was they were incredibly tired and wanted to sleep all day and the other was that their breasts were incredibly sore...she said it hurt to even walk around. :( Of course that doesn't apply to everyone, but I'm trying to make you feel better.

I've always been a "right on time" kinda girl and was never late, but both times I took the MCAT I was 6 weeks late!( yes, I'm a female. I know some of you thought I was a man) One of those time I was so convinced I was pregnant that I swore I had symptoms. Needless to say, I finally bought a $7 test and cured my anxiety.

Just get the test. It will save you many hours of endless worrying over perhaps nothing!

vixen - no worries! Just b/c you're on the pill doesn't mean it's not possible to be late or even skip a month. Happened to me all the time! I was freaked the 1st time , b/c I was taking the pills for quite a few years with a "perfect" record. Sometimes your body/ hormones just shift or change a bit.
Stress and all the other stuff mentioned plays a huge role!! If this happens again, see your Doc and he/she may change your prescription.

Vixen for God's sake get the test and do it. Like someone else suggested, you can get a kit that has two tests - so that if the first is negative, but you're still waiting next week, you can run it again. But if you are actually late at this point, the test will be VERY accurate for either positive or negative. Why keep torturing yourself?

Ok...you guys are way too freaking out!

Most girls vary it up by like 2 to 6 days every month.

I know my current girlfriend can sometimes be like a whole week late and then it comes..sometimes she comes a week early too. It's random.

It's totally dependent on stress and other factors. SINCE vixen IS on the pill, I would have to say she shouldn't worry too much! If she has been pretty good about taking it then she shouldn't worry too much...

it only takes about a week after conception for
hcg(the hormone that is measured) to show up by the time of your period it would already show uo

Mikegoal is right. *serum* hCG is positive by 10 days post conception. The drugstore kits (urine hCG) are positive within 12-14 days post conception. 14 days from ovulation = period due date. So the drugstore test is pretty reliable by the time you realize you're late.

ok, i feel comfortable enough to share it was negative...I got a box w/two tests as someone has suggested. Very strange that aunt flow is still not here...I still want to take the other test sometime.

I'm on placebos week this week, so I wanted to make sure I'm negative so I can continue taking the pill...

I don't know, this is all kinda weird...maybe I'm skipping one month for one reason or its delayed for some reason? I'm so happy its negative, but I guess its a wake up call...you can be on the pill, but still always be wary that the pregnancy CAN happen, and hopefully you have a plan...even though its negative, it was great to see how my bf and I reacted and made a decision TOGETHER, and that he was totally comforting the whole time....

Ok, i'm gonna stop babbling, but this whole cycle stuff can be really weird...but you docs must know that.

Thanks for all the help guys!!! :)

Same thing happened to me 2 years ago - I was like clockwork my whole life, but randomly one month it never came, test was neg, etc., and the next cycle I was right back on track. I asked my gyn about it at my next appt. and she said that it is completely normal, especially if you're on a triphasic pill (like ortho tri-cyclen), but it freaked me out so badly that I had her change my pills to the monophasic variety.

Glad to hear you're OK, and I wouldn't worry any more!
