How many elective months do you have at your school in your fourth year?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
9 months for electives.

4 months of electives, 3 months of selectives (med, pc, surg).
2 months in 3rd year.

We have 5 total electives, and some flexability within our surgery, and IM rotations.

9 elective months scattered throughout third and fourth years.

1 month 3rd year, 5 months 4th year, and lots of selectives in medicine and surgery both years.

Dire wolf...

what school do you go to?

A woppin 4 weeks in 3rd and just 12 weeks in fourth 😱

Personally it could be more....there are some of us who dod not know what we want to do.

How are you guys supposed to check out residency programs? People at my school are whining about how many requireds we have in 4th year.

I am one of those...I actually promote the opinion that the school does not want us checking out other programs, because they want us to stay in OK and practice rural/family medicine. It has been said that "we dont train specialists". Great for me. 🙄

I am one of those. A lot of schools have the entire 4th year as electives. However, I was aware of OSU-COM's policy before I accepted, so I can't complain too much. It sounds like we have it pretty good compared to some of you.

Actually there are a couple of us that have noted some interesting decisions made by faculty and staff that support a "conspiracy theory" of sorts. PM me if you'd like details.

anyone know about NYCOM? I hear they get alot.

Oh, I'm right there with you, even though I'll go into something that the school considers primary care. I think that we should be able to use our electives for anything...especially since most of our required rotations are in primary care. I also don't think we should have any required rotations during the fall of 4th year. They didn't ask me, though.

I was just really surprised to see how limiting some other schools are.

This was one of my huge reasons on how I selected which schools I wanted to attend. Like AZCOM only had 4 weeks in the 3rd year and 12 in the 4th.

1 month in year 3
6 in year 4 (one which can be used for interviewing or vacation)

UHS-COM

again,
does anyone know about NYCOM or NSUCOM.

Thanks

Thanks

NYCOM = 0 third year
= 3 months 4 year, with a whopping 2 week vacation. And at a couple of our main hospitals, you are not allowed to interview for residency while rotating there.

Beat that... 😡 +pissed+

Here is the book on roations at NSUCOM, its fairly big.

I kinda boils down to 6 months of electives and I believe one of those has to be in a rural setting. They have a list but I saw that rural EM could be one of those electives so I was pretty happy about that. They also give you a month for vacation or you can elect to do a board prep during that time as well. Its in that PDF...just do a search for elective.

here at UNECOM we have about 5 months electives....but they are tricky on when you get them. you really only about 3 months during showcase season if you look closely at the schedule (they make you have an OMM and rural medicine rotation in opposite semesters). very frustrating....

4th year
Selective rotations
A minimum of 20 weeks
Internal medicine 4 weeks
Emergency med 4 weeks
Surgery 4 weeks
OMM 4 weeks (late 3rd yr or 4th yr)
AHEC 4 weeks

Elective rotations
20 weeks (which is about 5 rotations or 5 months)
