yes, my friend had 1 B- in writing, and got in traditionally
Take extra classes and got A's in other writing classes to show that it was just a one time thing...

One B- in first semester physics. I have two other Bs and a B+, all of which are in pre reqs (gen chem 1/2 and ochem1). The rest are either As or A-s. I am applying as a senior in college, so am definitely a traditional applicant. I have multiple acceptances (MD and DO). The way I made up for it is I did well in all of my other courses, science and non science, and most importantly I did my best to get as much exposure to medicine as possible, both clinical and research. I think that helped me a lot. I also had a life outside of pre med stuff...I work two part time jobs and I play college sports. I think that also adds to my app even tho its not directly related to medicine (altho one of the jobs kinda is). Earning Bs in a few classes is not going to tank your app. If you do well to make the rest of your app as stellar as possible, you will have no problem with the admissions process. Make sure to apply early!!!!!

I've got an FW for a class I took many years ago when I thought "dropping" was "stop going" (Intro to Internet).

I've also got a D b/c of a counselor error and the school apologized for it but the school refuses to fix it. (WTF???)

Those bring my GPA down 0.12 pts (over almost 200 semester units). The most ironic part is that both classes were subjects I excel at. Oh well.... such is life.

Other than that, no B- or lower. I've had limited success this application cycle, but I think that's b/c of volunteering primarily.

C+ in first semester Bio. Got A's in all my other pre-reqs during post-bacc (except for B+ in Orgo I). Non-trad, just accepted to MD school two weeks ago.

I believe that I have 7 C's and one W, all in non pre-reqs. I've got some interviews coming up and from the people at the pre-med committee down here, none asked for an explanation of why once they looked at what courses they were in and what I majored in. I also don't feel like spending the $4k or more to fix the GPA, especially when all but two of those courses I now excel in, and hate with a passion.

That being said, I'm sure I got flagged at a lot of schools that I applied to, and it didn't help that I applied only to MD/PhD programs.

3 C's in bio and orgo, 3 B-'s in bio and orgo, straight B's in physics, but all A's and A+'s in upper division bio and chem, and a 36T on the MCAT. i graduated from a HYPS undergrad in June.

I also co-founded a $5 million dollar company when i was 20, won several entrepreneurship awards, and briefly worked on equity investments with Jackie Chan. But with the world in a recession it's near impossible to find VC funding or private equity infusion to continue being an entrepreneur, so right now I am working for the former assistant US surgeon general on health policy.

So far, I have been offered 9 interviews, several top 30 and one top 5 school. 3 offers of admission and no post-interview rejects.

Oh, I also applied to many MD/MBA programs, which may be a little different?

ohmedschool what's HYPS?
HYPS = Harvard Yale Princeton Stanford. Sometimes MIT is added in there, making it HYPMS (or something similar). It's generally used as an acronym to describe those undergraduate schools that are at the top of the top in terms of name recognition/prestige.

Oh, and no one ever who has ever gotten a B- or below has ever gotten into med school. Everyone who says otherwise is lying

Seriously, though, I wish you topic creators would use a bit more common sense! How do you expect to survive in the real world without it?

I have never experienced that, not in high school, nor in college, med school is PF, so I guess never. But I don't think that it matters. Apparently, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson got a few B- and they did ok. Abraham Lincoln never got any grades, because he never went to any schools and was self taught, just stayed up late trying to teach himself how to read. So read the Gettysburg Address. Greatest piece of political writing in the history of this country. Lincoln, that guy could write. Every single word mattered. Perfect.

Gen Chem 1: C+ (wow, dumbest mistake ever lol)
Physics 1: C+ (and I'm an engineering major lol) Re-took for an A
Chemical Process Control: C --screw this class seriously
Organic Chemistry 2: C -- Re-took for a B (ouch)

I won't be applying for a while, but whatever I got time.

I haven't received my final grade yet but I feel like I might be getting a C in Bio 1. Is it worth it to retake it or should I just forget about and do better in the future? Also if you retake a class do they just count the higher grade or do they average in both?

DO schools will count the higher grade. Im not sure what MD schools do, but i know they DO NOT just count the higher grade. I think its an average between the two, abut i'm not sure.

It's averaged, but that's just through standard GPA calculations. E.g. if you got an F in a class (0 units) and then repeated it for an A (4 units) then the resulting GPA would be a C (2 units). The ADCOM's don't actually "average" and re-weigh your GPA b/c the averaging is taken care of in the actual GPA calculation itself.

  1. C in Gen chem II
  2. C in Calc III
  3. C in an engineering course
  4. F in Calc IV
  5. C in physics
  6. C in Econ
  7. C in computer ethics
  8. 2 W (not fails)

However, in the 50 credits since then, nothing below a B. In the last 30 credits, I have 8 As and 1B+. In my post-bac where I take pre-requisites, I have a 3.87. I'm hoping to get my overall to about a 3.53, and my science to (hopefully) a 3.35. I'll keep taking full courseload during my gap year, and at the end of that, I hope to have 3.6 overall and 3.5-3.6 science and apply again the year after that. If after 110 credits of 3.9+, medical schools still don't like me. There is nothing much else I can do :), and I'll re-evaluate my options (do an SMP probably).

I may have all of you beat.....

C: 19 hours worth (so like 6 classes and a lab)

D: 6 hours worth (2 classes)

F: 9 hours worth (3 classes)

W: 12 hours worth

I have an acceptance and had 5 interviews out of the 7 places I applied (but i only applied in Texas ;)). Incredibly, this past has been great fodder at interviews and been source of positivity amongst my interviewers; of course however, I had to maintain nearly a 4.0 my last 2.5 years and had to do well in the MCAT (not like 38 or anything) for them to give me a second look.

Didn't apply my senior year (for obvious reasons), got in during my glide year.

Eh. Don't worry so much about this stuff. You're going to work hard no matter what, right? Hit the books, do the volunteering, and get in the research hours. Score as high as you can on the MCAT. This stuff is a no-brainer.

I had 4 B-'s and a W. I had a year between college and med school.

1 D+ (Yeah, i know a +)

Naturally under extenuating circumstances I'd rather not divulge in. That semester was the most depressing/aggravating semester ever and the professor in that court definitely didn't help.

But I'm not House M.D.

3 W, I think (trig, calc, astro).

I'm ok/proud of my trig grade. Came in the same term as g chem... more personal suckage I'm not sure I know. Oceanography I don't give a flying f*ck about.

Will retake g chem, but that's it. Going to do calc in the spring.

As and Bs in everything else. 75 credits in, 150+ to go.
