How many recommendations should we have? I have 3 science and 2 non-science. Is that too many? Also should we have a clinical recommendation? Or a research recommendation? I am not interested in doing research, I really want to become a practicing doctor.

There was a thread exactly like this one a week or two ago you can probably find. But as to your last sentence, actually the majority of folks who do research as premeds want to become practicing doctors. Some of the more competitive schools and ultimately more competitive specialties positively view research.

I applied with 6 last year because the univ of utah requires 6. But I sent the same letters to every school so it seemed to work out. I had 1 research, 1 community service, 1 patient contact, 2 science, and 1 non-science. Some schools say they will only accept 3 or 4 but if you are using a letter service like virtualevals or something they will take as many as the service sends.

I also had five letters. I think it's a good idea to have one from EITHER a research advisor who could also be like a science professor OR one from a place you did ur clinical work and not all from professors. This way you can show that you know people OUTSIDE the world of classroom. Good luck.

I had 5 letters to begin with but used additional letters as updates....

A few academic, one from a clinician, one from my PI and one from a grad teacher. Worked out well.
