I'm getting ready to ask some profs for LORs. I'm wondering how many I should try to get? And how many in my major? In basic science? Are non-science and non-major ones acceptable? How many do schools usually ask for?

3 letters should be sufficient. These should be science professors, unless you are not a science major. then at least 1 major, 2 science. Or 2+2.

If you're a science major, 1 science non-major is ok. the others should be in your major. unless you're a physics major. then maybe 2+2. (though 1+2 should also be ok.)

is that clear?

clear as mud.

I'm sure I've confused you; I'm confused and I wrote the post. What's your major? [That should help clarify some things.]

The general rule of thumb is 2 science and 1 non science. A lot of schools will ask for at least one non science. I had 5 letters. 1 non science. 2 profs who taught classes, my PI , and a LOR from a volunteer program coordinator.
