I got hooked courtesy of thegenius, so I thought the least I could do was to pass the favor on to the rest of you. Never played? Go to www.websudoku.com and give it a try. Has anyone else clicked thegenius's link and become a sudoku addict? Today I finally finished my first evil puzzle, so I guess I'm about ready to move on to a new game now. 😉

I've tried very hard to avoid this game but I seem to come across it every where I turn. I see "pre-meds" at school solving it at 7 in the morning; I used to think of them as having fallen to the dark side. Maybe I'll just give one a try right now..but only one.

Excellent. 👍 Welcome to the dark side.

Hungry hungry hippos?
I occasionally play sudoku - they've been publishing a puzzle in my local paper for about a year now. I'll occasionally play around with one in the morning while I'm waiting for breakfast to cook. (Where are those robots that the Jetsons promised me? They would totally give me more time to play hungry hungry hippos, er, sudoku.)

My dad's an anestisiologist and he won't stop playing Sudoku!

It's insane.

So far I haven't gotten hooked yet. 🙂

I like playing a lot. I am trying to remember where I first heard of it. I think I actually saw a sudoku book at a bookstore when I was looking for something else, and was curious so I looked it up online. I tried some.... and yep, I got hooked. 😍

Check out megasudoku (256 squares using #s 1-9, letters A-F) if regular sudoku doesn't do it for you anymore and you don't care about sleep.

(sorry, couldn't help myself :meanie: )
:meanie: 😱

I haven't ever tried megasudoku....sounds like fun, but not until after the defense!

Hmm, I don't know about Hungry Hungry Hippos....I used to play that like twenty years ago, so the novelty has worn off by now.

Yes! Although, I don't understand the whole "...it's brand new... invented in america.." people keep saying about it. I first encountered sudoku in Japan when I was like 7-8 years old.. Regardless of where it was invented.. I certainly isn't new. I don't get what that's all about.

I even got a sudoku handheld for x-mas. It is a good stress buster for premeds/med students/anybody.. Doesn't take but 5-10 minutes to solve one. Have you seen those crazies out there doing the 16 by 16's???! 😱

Count me in....i got hooked. it passes the time

yeah, tried it, not a huge fan. crossword puzzles are a lot more interesting.. sudoku seems like each puzzle can be solved given enough time. some crossword puzzles, you ain't solving no matter how long you stare at them.

I love Sudoku... it's great for those mornings on the metro when I don't have a book with me. Unlike crossword puzzles, sudoku doesn't require any actual knowledge.

i just beat my best time! woohoo! Now i'm at 5m 6s on medium level 😛

Sudoku's fun... I like to play the hardest ones. They take a lot longer for me (about 45 mins?), but it's more satisfying. I consider it a weakness if I have to make marks (scrib numbers, etc). I'm using the Will Shortz compilation. Never tried websudoku, don't feel like printing them out...

I introduced it to my wife, and for a couple days she was a maniac about it, telling me she was going to become a professional player and try out for sudoku championships and Sudoku TV in Japan. Then she grew bored and stopped playing altogether. 😛

I got hooked and now I have my best friend, her husband, and my boyfriend hooked. It's like some kind of virus.

Thanks a lot, Q. It's on you if I don't graduate now...
 Well, it's going to be on me if *I* don't graduate now, too. 😛

I'm with you there. Putting numbers in some order isn't as satisfying as knowing some obscure three letter word for tide. Ebb for the win!

I love sudoku... it's almost as fun as knitting! 😛

Our free newspaper here (Metro) has a daily sudoku... when I worked in the lab we used to all get a copy and have sudoku races. Yay for productivity!

I love sudoku... I first ran across it waiting in the customer service line at wal-mart. There were 50 puzzles each on a card and in a box like playing cards. I'm totally addicted now and I hope that it doesn't affect my mcat score :]

Great, people!

You just got me hooked on yet another way to procrastinate from homework....

Awesome! I'm so glad I did my part to spread the obsession to others. 👍 thegenius, are you reading this? You've begun an SDN sudoku obsession. 😀

I don't know if it was the genius's link, it was in a thread a few months ago, "I can't take it anymore". I linked and liked. Now my son plays and I just fill out my financial aid forms. (Just consulted Eats, Shoots & Leaves to be certain of the correctness of my apostrophatic use)

Ah young padwan, I remember when you were but at 17 minutes...the glint in your eye was quite frightening.

Southwest Airlines now has sudokus (plural!) in their flight magazine, it makes flying out to interviews that much better.

Awesome, that's great to know. I've never really read the flight magazine, but maybe now I'll start. I still can't do an evil puzzle in less than 25 minutes, though. It takes me about 30 minutes on average to do those.

I just saw this thread - I love you Q. You are my sudoku apologist! It's great - as some people said on here...you don't need to be smart or have any knowledge to play sudoku. And it's a great way to kill time on a train or plane.

I decided to add it to my .sig footnote in favor of my mdapplicants link, and that was during the time that I was going CRAZY WITH SUDOKU. Now, I've solved all puzzles and have done dozens of evil ones, and am pretty good at it. I haven't played a sudoku though in some time.

And no, it isn't an East Coast thing. 🙂

So, how do people do evil puzzles without scribbling down notes for each cell? I find that remarkable - I guess you have to do logical deduction in your head instead of on paper. I can't stand playing in on the computer either - Sudoku requires a kind of a stare that is just not compatible with computer monitors. Maybe the next challenge I have is to complete a puzzle without scribbling down cell notes. Hmm...

i prefer printing it out and doing it on paper, not necessarily because i can't stare at the computer screen for too long, but because it becomes very obvious to your fellow employees that you are slacking off when the only thing on the screen is a 9x9 grid of numbers

Thanks alot Q. You've just added one more vice for me to manage. 🙂

I never write anything down unless they're the right numbers. I don't have a printer at home or at my desk in the lab, so I have no choice but to do the puzzles in my head, so to speak. Like I was telling you before, my trick is to look for the square where I can either eliminate all of the wrong numbers, or else eliminate all of the wrong squares. There is always one square somewhere on the puzzle that can be solved this way, but it isn't always easy to find it. If I get too tired of staring at the screen, I give up on that puzzle. I guess that's why I take about 30 minutes to do one, thegenius, because if it takes much longer than that, I get tired and quit. 😉

BTW, I've solved about half a dozen evil puzzles since I spoke to you last. 👍

Q: The only one in our house that plays this game is my daughter. Can I assume that this means she will be a premed?

I have no interest, but of course, I am not a premed 😎
