How many schools are you applying to?

27...total came to like $940.00 or something. Ga resident. All my state schools, every southeastern school that accepts decent #'s of out of staters, 3-4 low ranked high app volume privates, and probably 6-7 true dream schools. Maybe I should have cut the dream schools down to 2-3 or so, but if I don't do as well as I would like on the mcat I can always not send in the secondaries.

It's weird how many people I know that are only applying to 1-3 schools. Everyone here in georgia applies to MCG. Then most people apply to Mercer and Emory. I wonder what % of ga residents apply to 3 or less schools. I bet it's more than many outsiders realize.....

I ended up with almost 30 that I wanted to apply to but seriously began chopping off ones that I didn't have a chance for or whatever.. down to around 21 now.

also, I agree with the idea that its pretty strange to apply to like 1-2 schools.. we were looking at some website a few nights ago that gave GPAs and MCATs of people accepted to med schools.. its interesting to note that there were MANY cases that schools like Harvard didn't even award an interview to a guy with 3.95 GPA and 36R but for some reason accepted a 3.1 gpa guy instead.. that 3.1 guy must have done some SERIOUS extracirriculars.... or maybe he just slept with the interviewers? 🙂

cantal, but when a couple of those 1-3 schools are state schools that you really want to go to I sorta understand. Why should someone with a 3.9/35 mcat who really really wants to go to MCG or Emory because they want/need to stay in georgia litter the nation with apps when they know that they would rather just take a year off and apply in georgia again?

Also, I don't believe schools like MCG, South Alabama, UAB, Tennessee, Arkansas, the Texas state schools, etc are terribly random when it comes to admissions. If you have decent EC's and a 3.7+/32+, you will most likely get into these schools if you are a state resident. One guy I went to college with had a 3.96/34 and applied to just one school. He wasn't worried.....

I'm applying to about 12, depending on my new MCAT scores. 4 that I should be able to get into, 3 long shots, 5 fifty-fifty's. I basically will only apply to places that I would rather go to instead of my state school (OU).

lol, I'm just kidding Slickness.. although sleeping with the interviewers might the only thing thats going to get me into some of the schools I'm applying to with my stats ;-)

As far as applying to only 1-3 state schools, I definitely see the idea behind this and actually I followed it in high school applying to college (though I applied to a state school where I was certain my application wouldn't even be reviewed, probably just autoaccepted based on GPA/ACT). However, with medical schools having like 50-250 seats open and thousands of applicants, I don't think its ridiculous to waste an extra $60 applying to a few more schools and filling out their secondaries in order to avoid a real disappointment if you applied during a tough year. I could definitely be wrong, but I'm always one of those guys that takes the safe route...

I'm applying to 11. That way I won't get (too) sick of filling out secondaries. Every school is a place I would happy to end up at this point.

as of now, i think i am applying to about 20 schools

but if i get a good mcat score, i think i might apply to some more also

good luck everyone!

Somewhere in the neighborhood of 9-12. Damn, I wish Oregon had more than one school. 😡
Best of luck!

12-15 schools. My mcat was quite nice so I'm throwing in for that crapshoot that is top 20 schools + gtown and loyola (still have a thing for catholic schools).
