I think it might be interesting to get a feel for how many schools SDNers are applying to. I'm applying to 15 schools and was worried I was sending out more applications than I should, but I've been noticing people's lists in their posts that are 20+.
So maybe we can get a thread going with how many schools they're applying to and the rationale behind it. or, maybe not and this thread will just fade away...
To get it started, I'm applying to 15 schools (all MD).
5 in my home state (IL)
2 in my parents' home state (WI)
8 in other states (MD, MA, IA, MO, NE, NH, DC)
My "back up" schools are in my home state (although, we all know there's no such thing as a back up school in med school).
My "dream" schools or long shots are both in state and out of state.
My general goal was to have a good mix of top schools, mid-tier schools, and a few less selective schools.
Well, we'll see if anyone else wants to jump in on this and go into why you should or shouldn't apply to lots of schools or only a few.
