How many students on here had to reapply to med school to be accepted?

I was just reading some posts about not being accepted the first time you apply and what you should do in your time off. I was just wondering how many people have been faced with this decision. I've never really given much thought as to what i would want to do, but as my undergrad is drawing to a close i'm beginning to worry a lil bit more about it.

welcome to SDN!

This is my 2nd time applying.

Get back to me in say, 4 months and I'll let you know if I got in or not :)

I had to reapply.

It sucks having your academic life put on hold.

Thanks imtiaz!...just trying to figure out this stuff. I never knew there was a message board out like this out here. Glad i found it!

Becca,
Welcome to SDN! If you're just gearing up for the next application cycle, you'll find the info here invaluable. I couldn't have gotten through it without the people here.

And don't worry. MANY people get in on the second (or even third) try.

This has been my second year applying. I've volunteered some this year and have tried to work. The economy is really slow in Tucson right now, and a lot of people who have been laid off are taking up the entry-level positions. It sucks.

I know someone who applied 3 times over the course of 5 years. On the last try, the person got into the MD/PhD program at his/her state school.

The person took the MCAT twice, and did research throughout those years.

I think that is pretty admirable--s/he kicked ass in the end!

(trying to keep this person anonymous.)

This will be my second and hopefully last time applying (I'm applying for fall 2003). I applied last year but made some pretty bad decisions - applied late, only applied to about 8 schools, didn't have much volunteer experience. This year i want to do everything possible to give me the best chances - someone's got to take me!!!
Good Luck to all.
:)

applied twice, got in the second time. was getting ready to apply a third time when I got pulled off of 2 waitlists in 1 week. I have to say that was easily one of the best weeks of my life:)

this is my second time applying, and i got in this time (thank god!). there are any number of things you can do in your time off if you have to go through this process again. :(
i took a research position at the NIH (main campus in Maryland). They don't pay a lot (about 20K/year), but they pay for classes, are really supportive of your applications (like taking time off for interviews), and doing the research here can make a person look smarter, plus being published doesn't hurt. i think the website is training.nih.gov if you are interested. good luck!

:) :)

This was my first year to apply, but it's looking like I will be applying a second time. I wish I could be as lucky as another member who posted on this topic and got pulled off the waitlist, but for now, it's in God's hands. Besides, I'm enjoying being a newlywed right now, <img border="0" alt="[Lovey]" title="" src="graemlins/lovey.gif" /> so if I don't get in this year, I'll use my time off to gain some more medical experience and get adjusted to being a wife!

Third time's the Charm

This is my second time applying.

Applied twice, got in the second time off of the waiting list in July. Now only 3 months away from being an MD!

1st time, no interviews, no secondaries from even my state schools (except schools who send them to everyone).

2nd time, 13/14 secondaries (sent back 12), 5 interviews by Nov. 1, 2 more offers for Jan that I turned down, and 5 acceptances (3 DO, 2 MD, one in-state, one out-of-state)(3 by Nov, 1 in Feb, 1 off waitlist in June).

Weird, but I'm not complaining :)

My numbers are pretty average too, no grad degree, no research (not my own), no publications, no olympic golds, no physician parents, no international mission work, no bribes, no physician letters.

So if you don't make it, it does NOT mean you aren't qualified, and if you do make it, you are just as able as those who made it the first time.

REGULAR PEOPLE GET INTO MEDICAL SCHOOL

I am so regular it is sickening. Really. I live with me everyday, and I'm hardly ever impressed :)

Good luck to Jalbrekt, Imtiaz, and all the other second-timers (and first-timers too)! It can be done!

THis is my third time applying. Finally, I have 2 acceptances so far.

I'm with you Gmendese; this is my 3rd time, and I now have 2 acceptances. We are proof that you should never give up on your dreams :)

During my time off, I worked in a free clinic (treated patients with no insurance), and am now working in a research lab (not really medical related though).
