Hi anyone. I read on the forum that people were spending upto $12,000 just for med school admissions (can anyone top that?). It would be interesting to know how much do people spend for the med school admissions. I would think that many people got into credit card debt :( because of that. How did you repay your credit cards? I heard that you do not really have time to work while in med school. Has anyone used those debt consolidation services?

I spent about $3,000 without any acceptances so far. If I end up reapplying, I'm sure this number will double and possibly triple if I have a better cycle. Probably will need to take out another credit card to be able to pay for it all. The others are maxed out!

$6,000 and I still owe 2G's on my credit card

I remember getting my paycheck every week and sending it off to a med school with a secondary...ah, those were the days!

Lets see:

13 schools applied to via AMACS: $540

12 secondaries sent out: $600

Gas for my interviews at USC and UCI: $20

Flight/dinner/drinks at my WashU interview: $600

Getting to become a doctor and seeing people naked: Priceless

Ok, that joke was long in coming... I'm sure its been done before.

So I spent $1760 for applications to 13 schools: 2 waitlists, 1 acceptance.

If you got loans, $2000 is a drop in the bucket. Besides, considering you'll be paying $50,000 a year in total costs for most schools, its a small throw in the engorged bucket.

$6800 and no balance on my CC card! <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" />

fortunately my pay check was enough to pay for rent and application fees. unfortunately that leaves a balance of zero in my bank account!

i remembered stressing/complaining about the huge cost, but now comparing that to the 50k/yr i'll have to take out for the next 4 yrs, this is nothing.

like in all honesty?!

does it matter?! ur going to spend as much or as little that gets u by, right!?

just put aside as much money as you can...and just watch it disappear faster than a bunch of donuts in rosie o'donnells frige :p

probably around 3,000 for 15 schools to begin with: 2 acc, 4 waits, 4 reject, rest discontinued. This crap is really expensive

It's understandable that you would pay that much....but i'm wondering whether or not anyone really hasn't spent that much at all...i have a friend who applied to only two schools...i guess a little dumb, but he was certainly well qualified....total in all for him..i think around a couple hundred...........amazing!!

I lost count at about $3K, but all totaled, with interview clothes and everything, I think its somewhere around $5K. That's for 25 AMCAS schools, about 18 secondaries, 4 interviews, from which I got 3 accepts so far (still waiting to hear from MCPHU post-interview). I had a couple more interview invites, but turned them down b/c of cost.

All told (including interview clothes), I spent about $2500, over half of which was for the MCAT and the associated Kaplan prep course. So just for med school apps and interviews, it comes to around $1200 for 9 schools.

Disclaimer - these are all approximations. I am avoiding finding all my receipts.
MCAT Prep Class: $1000
MCAT Test: $170
24 AMCAS primaries: $840
22 Secondaries: $1500
2 Non-AMCAS Apps: $200
12 "away" interviews: $3600
1 "home" interview: $40
un-paid time off from work: $2400 (plus all my paid vacation & sick days)

I owe nothing on my credit cards, although I did have to carry a balance two times. I owe my partner $3000 for rent and living expenses.

It's really expensive, but I won't be reapplying, and that makes it worth it. If I had narrowed my list (like I thought I would have to for $ reasons, I did turn down a 14th interview and secondary b/c I was too broke), I would have dropped the three schools that accepted me, so it was completely worth it.

Good luck.

I think that I was around $8,000.

It would be for 22 applications, AMCAS, MCAT, Travel to and from 5 inteviews (all flying), and other misc. copying costs etc.

I did get 4 accepts so I think that it was worth it, but I did stay broke most of this year, and had CC debt. until this last month.

It was between 8 and $9,000 to prep for (I took Kaplan twice, the 2nd time at a very nominal fee) and take the MCAT, apply to 22 AMCAS (and 1 non-AMCAS) schools, and interview at (in a professional looking suit) a dozen schools. But I live in Alaska, and the airlines are pretty much holding us hostage up here.

AMCAS fee: $870
Dell computer (P4): $869 <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" />
Offer of admission: priceless :D

"dude, you're going to med school"

My mom told me that she does not like that my obsession of applying to medical school and she will not support me neither money nor morally :( She found out that I took some pre-med classes which are not requirement for my major :(
I cannot understand what are her problems if have a full ride schoolarship from my university...sometimes parents so hard to understand.
