How much do clinical specialists make a year?

Hi guys,

I am planning to do residency and may be specialize in cardiology or diabetes. Do clinical specialists make more than retail pharmacists?
Are there jobs out there for pharmacists to specialize in cardiology?

Pay for clinical pharmacists or clinical pharmacy specialists is typically only a few thousand (1-3k/yr, if that much) more than the avg staff pharmacist within that facility. The shortage of pharmacists is more associated w/ staffing as the "real" potential job supply/demand of clinical pharmacists is yet to be determined. Depending on the region, retail typically pays more for base salary than any hospital pharmacist (excluding director positions); however, you'd also have to consider varying shifts in retail (wknds, evenings, and possibly nights) and whether a differential is given to employees or not. Although in hospitals also have similar varying shifts they offer differentials as a standard. It just depends on what company you're talking about. Either way avg salary will vary w/ region but will typically range from 85-100k/yr for non-managerial positions. Clinical pharmacists would be right in middle depending on the region. Yes there are potential spots in cardiology, but you might have to blend it w/ critical care or internal medicine depending on the size of the practice site. I know a guy who completed a specialty residency and was hired as a clinical pharmacist for $82k per year. New staff pharmacists start in the upper 70's. This is in Tampa. Retail pays $100k in this area.
