I am planning to go over to Ireland (University College Cork) for medicine and I was wondering how much do residency programs weigh summer jobs that are not related to medicine such as say a fast food or service job? My plan is to fill my schedule with clinical electives/observerships back in Canada or the US during this time but they are unpaid/I will need to pay for them.

Working a "real job" to earn money won't (exactly) be held against you. But if you end up wanting a highly competitive specialty or program, you will be up against other students who lived on loans while dedicating their time off to research and other clinical/volunteer extracurriculars. Just something to keep in mind.

Get a job using your degree. It will pay better and be looked at better by medical schools.
