Hey... I'm kinda new here and was wondering everyone's consensus on how much is too much to spend on your apartment/house during med school. I will be attending UT-Memphis this fall and am currently apartment shopping. If you are not comfortable w/ saying how much you, yourself, spend, just an general idea will do.😀

Thanks!

Welcome to SDN!

I think your statement is way too broad. Lodging in New York City, Boston, San Fran, etc. is going to be much higher than in smaller cities.

You should let us know what type pf city you are looking at. Small? Large? Huge? etc.

Also what the average house sells for per square foot would be helpful.

Thanks for the welcome😎

I stated that I will be matriculating at UT, as in tennesee, not Texas... the real UT 😉 in Memphis. Definetely not NY or DC price of living, but from what I've found not the cheapest either.
Essentially, I've been looking at apartments, and for a nice single bedroom at a really nice, gated place, i'm looking at least $700-750/month. Do you all think that is too much to be spending on rent alone? It's fairly pricey in my book.

I do plan to find a roomate either second semester or M2, which will essentially halve the price on rent...

Just throw out some opinions for me!

As for house prices/sq. ft... around Knoxville, i think an fair estimate for a nice house goes around $85-100. I could be wrong there too... who knows... but knoxvegas isn't memphis then again.

Thanks

Well,

I'm on the waitlist at Meharry, and looking around Nashville, the price for a decent one bedroom near the school was around $500 (low end), but check with your school's fin aid or admin office, I'm sure that they have some better info for ya. Also check with other students on campus, rent.net has a ton of listings for apartments, or apartments.com. As a last resort, you could make a trip down there before school starts to scramble for a place, but right now is the best time to be looking since many students might be moving out of their apartments and landlords are willing to give out deals. Good luck 🙂
