How often do schools request transcripts pre-interview?

So I met with my adviser last week and asked her if I can still expect interviews from some of the "top" schools. She said some schools will wait till December and request a transcript to see my fall semester grades, and then decide whether they want to interview me or not.

How often does this actually happen?

I'm not sure if schools will actually request a transcript, but you can certainly send them one as an "update" and to demonstrate continued interest.

Some schools do request an official fall transcript, but it is not common. This might happen if adcomms are on a cusp making a decision on your file.

SUNY-Downstate does this, but as Catalystik pointed out, this is usually if they are on the cusp one way or another to extend an invite. At least with Downstate, I don't know of too many positive anecdotal outcomes from this. With the three people I know who received such a message last year, I think only one interviewed, the two others were ultimately rejected later in the cycle.
