how old were you when you go in to med school

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
IF I get in this go around, I will be 34.

I'll be 32 when I start if I get in this cycle.

to all those 30 and above, what did you do with your lives for all those years?

I'll be 29 if I get in the first time around. I've been a phlebotomist, EMT, EMT-Intermediate, respiratory therapist/echocardiographer, sports radio producer, waiter, and a funeral director's assistant.

When I got in? Got the letter two days after my 35th birthday. Worked in computers and books and played in a bunch of bands before that.

casue im planning to purse the medical path later in life, maybe when im 30.

I'll be 27 turning 28 next year when I go. I worked research for a year, pharmaceutical sales for 2.5 and have been in the USAF for about 1.5.

I'll be 24. I work in research at a hospital... Every doctor I work with has told me it is the best thing in the world to take some time off and develop as a person before med school. Most tell me they wish it were a requirment that students took AT LEAST two years off....

i'll be 23 but my undergrad is taking forever

I'm graduating a year early and will be starting med school at 21.

I got my PhD in Medical Anthropology, worked as a case manager for CMI adults, went into fundraising (major gift director) and finally got a job as a professor.

Um. Ah. Well..... I'll be celebrating the 10th anniversary of my 29th birthday next year. Yes, I'm that old that I just have anniversaries and not actual birthday celebrations anymore.

What have I done? Well, I was a firefighter for 5 years. A paramedic for 15. Back to school for 3 to get my BS degrees. Oh, let's not forget wife and mom of 2 wonderful children (ok, mostly wonderful unless they're driving me nuts that day).

Shyrem, we are definitly drinking when you come out for your interview! Plan on staying overnight so we can celebrate!

got married, went to PA school, got divorced, worked as a PA for 5 years, got bored....
um...bought a house, learned to garden, made a regular income, paid student loans and way too much tax, scouted for antiques, learned to make stained glass, learned to cook, became an aunt 3 times, tried out a few bad boyfriends, found a good boyfriend, still want to be a doctor....

I hear ya on the tax thing, fellow Oregonian. I'm jealous about the house purchase. We just can't swing it, and of course we might leave.

As for me, I'll be 30 when I start. I went to law school, decided I didn't want to be a lawyer (just an fyi, not a great career move), ran away to Oregon with my husband (then boyfriend), was unemployed and super stressed for a few months there in 2002, got an insurance job that was cool and is now boring, decided to go to medical school, started taking prereqs, and am now here applying.

I don't regret any of it, especially not the last few years. Law school, well, if I had to do it all over, I wouldn't do that again, but I did learn a lot from it about life, decision making and all that good stuff. Instead, I'd immediately run away to some cool place, find work and go from there.

I was in the Army for 6.5 years working as an Arabic translator, worked as an EMT for 3 years, and worked for 3 years as a clinical research coordinator in the ED of a teaching hospital.

Glad to see other applicants over 30.

Starting at 21

unicorn, good to have another youngin' such as myself on here.

26. Lived in foreign beach town, partied with/dated rock stars, got masters degree in business.

Speaking of rock stars, I feel like Robert Palmer right now. Just went suit shopping tonight, and was feeling disgusted about paying another $500+ for a decent suit. Came home, checked out my closet, pulled out my latest suit--- the one I used for my undergrad interviews-- and remembered why I went shopping in the first place. I look like Robert Palmer in this suit!! Ha ha. It has shoulder pads in it!!! How can it be permissible?

Simply irresistible... 😀

I'll be 24 (hopefully, if I get acceptances in this cycle)

I have done lab research, and improved my piano playing skills. I now play for my church.

You are more bound to get an answer by going to the nontrad forum if you are looking for older candidates.

I'll be 34 if I get accepted on schedule. Getting a late start isn't the greatest thing, but it's given me the opportunity to be involved in medicine for a while and get a feel that it's the right field for me. There is no way I would have been this certain about it just coming out of undergrad.

I know someone who started med school at 38; now 15 years later he owns a multispecialty clinic with 15 docs working for him and owns amazing mri and pet/ct scanners.

Since college 5 years ago I've been a pacs admin and advanced visualization specialist (post-processing of ct/mri studies: virtual endo, volumetric 3d visualization, etc.). All that with a BS in Psych

If I get in this time I'll be 30 when I go. I got a MPH and have been working as a health educator in a county health department. I personally think that med school should be like B-school and not take people without at least 5 years experience.

If my grades reamain where they are, at my current pace,

21

i'll be 25 when my first year classes start in the summer/fall

Turn 22 in July, head off to med school August/Sept.

DUDE! Harry "Bomber" Harris! What a great avatar! You officially are a doctor I want to practice with. What school do you go to?

That's disgusting, I mean I wouldn't brag about looking like a corpse 😀 (Come on, I couldn't have been the only one thinking that. Palmer was cool though and reminds me of my youth. Too bad he's gone.) Anyway another older fellow. If I get in the 2006 class I'll be 35. I used to do tech support and also software engineering.(Paid decent but not my cup of tea.)

Hey-- I wasn't braggin'! I was making fun of my old suit. 'Tis why I have to go shopping for a new one. I don't think the adcomms would make the Robert Palmer connection, though... I was going to say I looked like Michael Hutchence a la New Sensation video, but that would be disrespectful to the king. Michael rocks.

And hey, shut up-- Robert Palmer is cool! 🙂

😱 Wow...Thats a lot of experience

i'll be 21 when i enter, though i'm considering taking a year off in between (if i get a deferral)

I'll be 32 when I start med school next fall.

Since high school, I've done half an English degree, went to nursing school, worked as a registered nurse, decided to pursue medicine, and taken pre-reqs, finishing my English BA on the way.

It's all good. 😀
