i am a medical student studying in the philippines and i will be an intern on March 2006. i would like to seek your advice on where can i apply for internship abroad? i mean, what hospitals? what countries? what are the requirements? i prefer asian countries but any country would do. thanks a lot.

Hmmm...tough question, as its a bit vague. If you are interested in just an internship you must first check the requirements of the country in which you wish to complete residency training. That is, it is not worth doing an internship in any ol' country if it isn't recognized by your eventual home country.

Your "home" country (ie, wherever you will be finishing your training and presumably setting up practice) should be able to provide you a list of countries with acceptable training or regulations on prior training. Usually available from the national medical association.

At any rate, moving to International Forum...

i think that depends on which med school you are attending. the most important thing is to be sure that your school authorizes outside rotations before you start calling up hospitals and making arrangements.

i know the NUS (national university of singapore) will allow you rotate for up to 8 weeks at the NUH (national university hospital)

you can also check out the CUHK (City University of Hong Kong) and the Hong Kong University (HKU). I did some research on HKU a couple of months ago and you can rotate at the teaching hospital, but i think if you intend to roatate in medicine then you are required to know some Cantonese.

also check out Indian/Pakistani Universities, check out the Aga Khan in Pakistan i think it's possible to rotate there.

after going through your post i kindda get the feeling that you intend to do the entire intern year outside the PI. if that's what you are thinking then you might wanna reconsider especially if you aren't familiar with the system outside the PI, it's hard enough adjusting to internship when you are familiar with the system. just my dalawang centavos.

all the best my_applecore.
