How to ask for Letter of Rec from OMS Chairman during D2 for externship?

I am planning to do OMS externship during next summer break at the end of my D2. I am wondering what would be the best time/way to approach for letter of recommendation from OMS chairman/PD as many externship program requires that piece of letter. There probably won't be any chance for the chairman/PD to get to know me as I am not in the clinic yet during my D2. How did anyone deal with this situation?

I'm interested to know how this would turn out also. What would you be doing on the externship seeing how you haven't even entered clinic yet?
