how to become a surgeon

im currently a bioengineering/premed undergrad student, and i was curious as to how i would go about becoming a surgeon in medical school. do surgeons have to go through more schooling beyond the 4 years of medical school? or can you choose to become a surgeon as part of the medical school stay?

Once you finish undergrad, you go to med school.

Med school is 4 years long.

If you want to become a general surgeon, that residency is 5 years long.

Other specialized surgeons may need to apply for fellowships after that first general surg residency.
