how to decide

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
One thing I've learned during the app process is how irrelevant rankings and residency records are. Every school I interviewed at gave lists of their residency placements, and they are similar. Every school will have a ton of FP/IM's, Peds, Surg placements, and even low ranking schools will have people match in rads, derm, optha, neurosurg etc.

Much like choosing a 4 year college, I will end up at the school where I will have fun, enjoy my day to day life and where I can do well (preferable curriculum, supportive faculty).

Choosing is actually alot easier than you think. Go with your gut, because that is all that matters.

Simple enough. You should go where you will be most happy. There are VERY few times where you should choose a school over the one where you think you will be most happy.

Most likely, if you go where you are most happy, you will do better than you would at a place you don't like being.

This was taken from a previous post, but I think the Adcadet Index is also useful for deciding which med school to matriculate at: http://www.studentdoctor.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=58644&highlight=Adcadet+Index

US News is great for the Top 50 US News, but to go beyond that you need to use the Adcadet Index (AI) to calculate the ranking of each school. To calculate the AI you simply assign a numerical value to each letter of the alphabet in ascending order (A=1, Z=26), and add up the values in the school's name. For example, Yale would be 25+1+12+5=43. You can clearly see that it has a great start with the Y, but the A and E really bring it down. And the lenght of the name is just the killer. Clearly not a Top 100 school, and not worth attending. Now compare that to U of Mississippi...clearly U of MS is a superior school.
