I'm expecting to get some good opinions on this. How would I, generally speaking, go about finding the "best" dentists in my geographical location (NYC) for a family member who has had poor experiences in the past and needs a ton of work done. Aside from word of mouth, of course.

I'm thinking, perhaps an academic affiliation, which would maximize chances of quality. Someone who also teaches, maybe? I'm mainly looking for someone who hasn't sold his/her integrity for the almighty dollar, who would suggest and perform procedures that are indicated for the best outcome, rather than best profit.

Hello,

I suggest you look into school that has Graduate Prosthodontics Residency then apply to be a patient. This applies only if your friend needs complex restorative needs. DP

I would recommend calling a couple specialists in your area, explaining your situation and asking for a recommended dentist. Specialists get to see the work of alot of general dentists and hear from their patients about how they are treated there, so they usually have a pretty good idea who the good dentists are.

Problem with this is most specialists aren't going to take the time out to talk to this guy (beastmaster I think it's safe to assume you're not female). I would say academic affiliation is a great thing to look for. Personally when I was looking to see a dermatologist, I went to the phonebook, ignored all the flashy 1/2 page derm ads and found a doc who did no advertising aside from his name, address and number. In any case if you don't feel comfortable after 1 appt., just go somewhere else and have your records transferred there.
