I am truly interested in several research schools. I have been reading their research projects so far. I would like to have a conversation with the dean/director of admission to see what kind of students they would expect. And I would like to chat with them about the philosophy/goals of their schools.

Where can I get a chance like that? Should I send a letter to express my interest?

Has anyone done it before?

Thank you for any comments in advance. :)

I had a meeting with the director of admissions at one of the schools I applied to when I was over there doing summer research. Someone actually suggested I go talk to her, and so I called and she was incredibly receptive. You want to 1.) do it when it isnt the height of application season, and 2.) be prepared to get shut down.

But I think you should also think realistically about what you think can be gleaned from the meeting. Mine was nice, but honestly, she didn't tell me anything that wasn't available on the school's website or SDN. I brought my notepad waiting for her to give me the secret code that I could slip into my PS to get auto-admitted, but no such luck!

Same. I was doing the SURP program at the school and they set it up for us.
