I recently graduated and have been accepted into medical school. It's a well known fact that medical students often change the specialty they pursue, however, Emergency Medicine is something that I have been interested in for a while and I want to know how to get into an EM residency. Specifically, I want to know what EM programs look out for in an applicant and how important research and volunteering is as compared to Step 2 CK scores (since Step 1 will be p/f for me), LORs, and grades during EM and other rotations. Thank you for your help.

Edit: nonsensical sentence

So...the first sentence makes no sense. But let's ignore that.

There's a whole EM forum with a WAMC thread (among several thousand others) where you can get answers to this question.

It depends on which programs you are interested in going to. If you are shooting for the top programs, research will be important. For most other programs it won’t be as important but it never hurts to have research on your app.

EM puts a lot of weight into auditions and SLOEs (look it up).

Volunteering to get into residency is way Way low on the importance scale.

Step 1 usually matters a lot but with it P/F no one really knows what’s gonna happen. I would assume Step 2 will be more important.

Basically, do well on your boards and classes, get a little research, make connections and audition at places to get good SLOEs and you should match.
