Did any one of you get LORs from DOs? My pre-med advisor requires us to get a DO letter. I don't know any of the DOs. Can any body tell me how they can get letters from DO? Thanks a lot. 🙂

First of all, you may want to search the forums for similar topics or questions you may have about getting an LOR from a DO.... This is always one of those topics that arises each year.

Many students have tried multiple ways of getting a letter from a DO.... That ranges from looking in your telephone book, visiting a local hospital or clinic, or simply knowing someone who knows someone who knows a DO.... with that said, I would first look in the phone book. Then you may want to ask around the hospital or clinics you normally go to when your sick and ask if any of the staff (docs, nurses, administration) would know of any DO that would like a student to have them shadow and write a LOR....

Seeing your from NY, you may want to visit NYCOM (New York College of Osteopathic Medicine) and ask their Admissions Office for any help in getting in touch with a DO.

I hope those suggestions help catapult you to your search for a LOR from a DO.... Lot's O' Luck 😎

ditto what JP said, if you ask very nicely and are very professional you should have no problem getting shadowing oppertunities or letters. From my personal experience, 1 visit to the doctors office or clinic is worh 10 phone calls.

Hi I actually had a question regarding shadowing a D.O physician. I found about 6-7 D.O physicians around my area and well, after calling each one of them and realizing that phone numbers have changed, offices have changed ( I actually got an Engineering company when I called up one number so, guys, do know that this information on sdn website might be a bit old). Anyhow after trying to call up these physicians, I was only able to contact one pediatrician who is a D.O.

I am going to be shadowing him this coming saturday. I had called the Dr.B's office last week and couple days later he called back to talk about shadowing. He told me that he is not a 'true' D.O physician and he is just a pediatrician. I guess what he meant was that he wasn't applying OMT treatments to his patients. Anyhow, the best thing is that he is a graduate from CCOM and well, I dont think he has ever had students shadow him, because he asked me what do i need to shadow for. ha.

Anyhow, so I said that I am applying to D.O med schools this summer and the requirement for secondaries is that I need to get a letter of recc from a D.O physician. He told me to come this coming saturday, June 28th, between 9 and early afternoon and then we will see what happens. Although Dr.B was wonderful and very nice on the phone I am a bit lost on how to go about having him get to know me real well. Because I would love to have a letter of recc to be personal, but i guess I will only know how things are going to be after i meet him. I also wanted to learn more about OMT or actually see how it works and thats not going to happen either 🙁 I also can't find any other physicians that are not too far away from my house. So can someone give me advice on what to do once I get to see him. Because I did ask him I can drop by so that he gets to see me and know who I am before going on saturday. He said that it is just fine that I see him just on that day.

So what do i do? It seemed like he had no idea what to do with a student who shadows him and also he seemed a bit lost. I am going to be a bit lost too, wondering how to go about asking questions and transition to ask about a letter of recc. ]

ps. Sorry for the long post. But any help is very very appreciated 🙂

Hi DrLady -
May be you are just worry. I think when you meet him in person and discuss with him about the LOR, he will understand. Most pediatrician are very nice. I was in your situation last year. It is very hard to find a DO physician in Chicago area, especially if you live around uptown Chicago or Evanston area. If things won't work out well and you still look for another DO physician, let me know. I will pm you.

Best,

Best,

Surely ye jest! There is no shortage of osteopathic physicians in the Chicago area, since one of the oldest osteopathic schools is located here and alumni abound. Perhaps there are certain locations where DOs are a bit more scarce, but if you are willing to look around and travel around the Chicago area you will find DOs in most all specialties. Since you mentioned Evanston, off the top of my head I can tell you that the head of critical care at Evanston Hospital is a DO, and there are numerous others in the Evanston-Northwestern system. Pick some of your local hospitals' websites and try searching...you might be surprised. Or, call up CCOM and see if they can help you.

Ok, So today I shadowed the doctor that I had talked about last week. I must say that this was the most eye-opening and most wonderful experience for me. He is a pediatrician and I asked him a lot of questions on OMT and he said that it is a choice of a physician whether he wants to use it or not, however he doesn't feel that he needs to use it in his practice: pediatrics. He is the most caring physician I have ever seen by far. I have shadowed few doctors but none come even close to him. Oh wow, I really think that today I am just in awe of him!! His main priority is that his patients are feeling comfortable first and then he proceeds to do the checkup. It was evident in his clinic with all the bright colored tiles and decorated walls so that the children dont feel like they are in some sort of a intimidating environment and i dont know how to describe all this clearly enough!

He is in practice with two other MDs and they also have a dietician and psychologist working in the clinic hence providing a better treatment for his patients. I hope to become as wonderful a physician as he is. I am so motivated and inspired! He graduated from CCOM and as the time for me to leave came near, he said that he is very willing to write me a letter of recc for the med school. I am soo excited!!! 🙂 🙂 All these debates on sdn about MD vs DO, I have hardly taken part in them and these debates are soo useless because none of the patients' parents (as for some of them it was their first visit to his clinic) EVER asked the doctor I was shadowing about the differences in DO or MD. All they cared about was getting their children's ear infections or pains or checkup done.

However I have a question. Will the secondaries have their own letter of recc or can I just use the letter of recc form that is given by my pre-med office in my univ to give it to him? I am also thinking of shadowing another physician who applies OMT and also so i can have a letter of recc from another D.O physician.
