How do you guys recommend keeping in touch with old professors or research advisors? What if they don't work at your current institution? Any advice would be very much welcome. :)

I think that a simple e-mail, or even better, a phone call, giving them an update of what you've been up to (interesting/impressive courses you've taken, research youve performed, awards youve been given, etc...) and reminding them that you'll eventually be asking for a LOR does the job

I think email is definitely the best way. It's convenient for you and for them. Update them on your academics and any interesting extracurriculars and ask what's new with them too.
