I have an interview at Detroit Mercy on the 19th of September and I'm really worried about it. Interviews have always stressed me out whether it be for jobs or for research positions. The interview will NOT be conducted in person and will be all virtual.

What is the best way to practice and how far in advance/how much should I be practicing? Right now I'm booting up my video recording software and practicing responses to questions to check my posture, facial expressions, etc. Does anybody here have experience interviewing at Detroit Mercy? How was it? What questions did they ask you? I have already looked at the SDN questions.

I recently came across this really cool platform called Tooth Talk. It was created by dental students at the University of Michigan. They offer mock interviews, tailored to the schools you apply to! Could be something to check out to help prepare for you interview!I think you can email them here [email protected]

Your interview will be largely dependent on who you interview with. In my interview, I interviewed with two faculty at once, and they switched off asking questions. They tell the faculty not to respond to any of your questions or chatting until the end. So it is the most like a traditional job interview compared to other dental schools. They will ask you questions, and simply want your best attempt answers. Many of the questions are scenario based “what would you do if...” with no right or wrong answer, and your strategy for this type should be just to answer the question with what you would do in this situation (not what you think they want to hear) and be able to justify your answer. Be confident in your response even if they try to poke holes in your reasoning. I also was asked some routine questions that most other schools asked like why dentistry and had me talk about some of the experiences I listed on my app. But like I said before, it depends on your interviewers. We’ll call these interviewers^ type “A.”

The type “B” interviewers at UDM are way more chill and seem to want to have more of a conversation rather than rapid fire questions. Some of the students I talked after my interview had interviewers more like this. In this case, just engage them like you would any other professor.

So feel out which type you have and respond appropriately. And most importantly just be yourself and find a way to stay relaxed during your interviews if possible.

Also, the UDM interview is only like 15-20 minutes total, so it’ll fly by.
