not comparing schools..

but I just wanted to get an idea on whose going to georgetown and who are going to GWU?

I have a couple of friends who are in georgetown and a couple of more who will go this year...maybe the two schools can get together, go out and have parties?! I don't think there is a hostility or competition between GWU and georgetown like UCLA and USC 😛

if you are waitlisted in either school and intersted in them as ur top 3 choices...please also list...it would be kewl if we all hang to together and plan class retreats?! no?

😎

Going to GW so far, but you knew that. I'm interested in a little cross-campus fraternity myself, and it'd be good to have friends off campus too.

I'm still waiting to hear from GW post-interview, but it's right up there on my list. I'm all for meeting up with GTown peeps. 🙂

Awesome! I know a couple of other pple as well....this should be fun...I know hawkeyes is definitely going to Georgetown...

didn't you guys love DC? how far is DC by the way form new york? 😛

are the GWU and georgetown campuses close?

we should also definitely have study buddies....ehem, foxy  u be my study buddy...

I am on the GW waitlist and will go if accepted. I also went to both GW and Georgetown as an undergrad. I would be up for a retreat, etc., no doubt.

I barely make the cut.. Georgetown is 3rd choice. I'd SOO be down with meeting people and hangin' out before classes. would be pretty swank to know a crew before the madness begins. Still have yet to write a letter post-Highly Select list. I'm really hopin Pritzker pulls through in the next month, if not, letter writing time!

All you people talking about schools in DC seem to forget there are three medical schools in DC. I am gonna go to Howard. When I was there for my interview I saw a flyer for a party thrown for all three schools. What because Howard is a Historically black institution you people don't even mention it when talking about DC?

I don't think Watcha meant to offend anyone, he just has friends at Gtown but got accepted to GW.

that's awesome that all the schools get together and have parties 🙂 I heard from vkrn on SDN that the Chicago schools do a similar thing.

believe, me, had I created a thread for a wisconsin get together (I got in to MCW), I wouldn't have included University of Wisconsin...does that mean Univ of Wisconsin is a bad school?! oh no, not at all, it's probably even better...I just didnt know anybody there 😀

same with howard...I'm sure it is even better than GWU, but to be honest..I didn't know anyone there...so it wasn't like I was being ignorant or racist?! I swear.....

wathca,

I am not at all offended. I just wanted people to recognize that there are three medical schools in DC. As for me I hope that the students from all three fine institutions can get together once in awhile and hang out. We are all in this together! Hope I'll meet friends from GW and GT.

Foxy and everyone else, we should definitely scout out the region and find out a restaurant or location that will be our gathering ground...it will be like Seinfeld or Cheers....a place to call our own...

I think personally, each school should designate their own "turf" and then we should collectively all pick "another turf" for all three schools...

of course...this is If I end up at GWU...damn may 15 is coming closer and closer...argh

Med2006:
Whoa, there pally. ;-) Hey, I interviewed at Howard and actually I thought it's history was one of the coolest things about it. (nope, I'm not black.)
But you're right. We should all meet somehow when possible. and I believe we are forming the core of the next 'tri med blowout party' right here. 🙂
It'd Definately be hip to have a crew together before the madness rushes in.

(OH, and Doctora: it's always best to have more then one study partner, you know? ;-)

medicine2006,

All I have to say is that I am glad you said what you said....Happy to here that you chose Howard, hopefully I will be there in August as well.

Hey, you're forgetting about your service peeps over at USUHS! 😕 Maybe you have a thing against blacks AND military people?!? (j/k!)
It's in Maryland technically, but the two blocks that separate Bethesda from DC shouldn't be that big of a deal, right?? I've been working in the area for a few months now, and starting at USUHS in the fall, but I'd also love to hang out with people from the surrounding schools.

Count me in!! I'm in at GTown, and it's my 2nd choice, so it's more than likely you'll see me there, too. Yes, I LOVED DC and am down with the SDN crew thing...let's do it!

I'm going to scope out the territory from May 1-5 with another friend who's going to GTown. One of my top priorities for the trip (after finding a place to live) will be to find a centrally located place to hang (between ALL 4 schools!) with my SDN gang. 😀

there's lot's of places in DC to hang out, especially if you're in to bars. The Dupont Circle and Adams Morgan areas are usually great places with lots of people, and of course georgetown. The nice thing is that the metro will get you just about anywhere, so long as you're OK with going home by 2AM. I have loved DC for the time that I have been here, and I'm glad that I'll be here for med school.

inanna, what's your 1st choice school? i'm surprised it's not like your 5th choice behind all the UC's. I'm from CA too, but didn't get any love from my home state.

Hey all! I'm SO excited!!! I love this thread! I agree with all former posts. Let's DO scope us out an eccentric, cultural, yet very American (we will be in the center of America, no?) hang out. We should def. make it a point to get together regularly... just to make it easier to see people. G'town has my heart, def... but I am still wavering between NUMS and then, of course, there is my lesser known state school, the only one that gave me any love. It boils down to money, you know? But then, I want to go somewhere I know I will be happy. But then, I suppose I could buy some happiness with an extra 150K. 🙁 HELP! 🙄 I think we may need to rename this thread to include the military peepls. I can't wait! This will be better than any school club!

Add me too!!! I'm 95% sure I'll be attending Howard and would love to hang out with other med students, particularly since I'm not from the D.C. area. So when should we all meet up? Orientation at Howard begins in the middle of August . . .

Hello everybody.....

Hopefully I will be joining the DC group this Fall if Howard ever come to their senses and just take me already.

GW begins Aug 21.

*When do the other schools start?

*Maybe a few days before would be a good time, if the dates are all similar, or a week or so after school starts?

i'm definitely going to GW if i get off the waitlist...and i'd love to make some new friends...first round of drinks on me!

I interviewed at GW on March 7th (before the 3/29 deadline to accept as many seats in the class). I'm still waiting to hear from them now--will I only get waitlisted, or are they giving more outright acceptances still?

hi foxy,

you might get an outright acceptance at this point since it looks like a lot of people have withdrawn. those of us already on the waitlist will not be reviewed again until may 15th. oh btw, make sure to send in a strong letter of interest before may 15th (that's the deadline for waitlisted applicants who want to remain active and still under consideration). good luck!

I spoke to Darrell yesterday and he said to wait a few more weeks. I'll write the letter this weekend in any case, telling them I'm still interested and would prefer to go there over the school I'm accepted at, etc....

Georgetown starts Aug 15. Anyone know about Howard? 😀

In my acceptance letter they said Howard's orientation should start August 18 (that's a Sunday).

On another note; when are you guys gonna start looking for housing in the DC/MD/VA areas?

UCLA ends june 15th for me....and I have a couple of things to take care off and then head around the 22nd or so...

Watcha you from UCLA huh? That's awesome! I graduated from there March 2000 with a degree in Biochemistry. I hear there are quite a lot of fellow Bruins out there in DC area schools.

can someone please tell me the locations close to or "affordable" places near GWU?!

by the way, is Georgetown far superior to GWU? it's in a better location right? how far are the schools apart?
are they within walking distance? and is it possible to survive in DC without a car? they have the metro, no?

thanks

Medicine2006,

Where are you planning on staying at Howard? Dorms or private housing?

If outside/private housing- are you going hunting yet? 😕 Since they start august 18th, I would think one would need to start looking about a month in advance.

I don't think that GWU and Georgetown are walking distance to each other. Seemed pretty far to me. Don't know where Howard is. I have a friend at GWU who does have a car, but says that you really don't need it. It's somewhat more of a hassle to have it. The metro lines are quite convenient, from what I've seen. You can even get to Dulles using metro (and then perhaps a bus).

thanks•••••I don't know about GT being "superior" but I guess it is probably ranked higher if that matters. It's a pretty long walk between GT and GWU, but there is a pretty good metro system in DC. Problem is that georgetown is one of the few areas without a stop, so students there have it a little tougher. I understand that there is a shuttle from the Dupont Circle stop over to GT, and it's free for students, just take you a little more time.

as for affordable places in DC... hahahaha <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" /> not likely, especially in the Foggy Bottom area where GWU is.

BTW, USUHS students will be off doing military training during July, and then I think our orientation starts August 12. I would love to meet everyone from the DC schools either after all of our orientations start or the first couple weeks of classes (before we all get super busy with med school!!).

The dorms will have undergrads as well. While I think that the undergrads at Howard are probably cool I've done that kinda thing while I was an undergrad. I am not sure an 18 yr. old roommmate would like having a med student roommie who needs to study a lot more than he does.

I think I want to live in Maryland. I am gonna visit DC in late May so I'll look at some apartments then. I think you might have to look for housing a little earlier than one month before orientation but I could be wrong. Did anyone from Howard send you any info on housing, financial aid yet???

I don't think I congratulated you for getting into Howard. Well congrats Mellow!

Apartments in Crystal City, Ballston, and Court House Plaza are all located near metro stops and are somewhat cheaper than near GW and GT. The closest metro to GT is Foggy Bottom, located right at GW's medical school. I would estimate that it is a mile walk from the Foggy Bottom Metro to the GT campus. I used to walk it all the time, but it would be a pain to do it daily. The Georgetown shuttle bus is definately they way to go on a daily basis.

Probably the cheapest housing option, all other things being equal, is to live away from the metro lines and drive or take a bus to them, and then metro in. If you factor the GT shuttle bus into that, it is a crappy commute. Plus, you have to factor in the monthly cost of the public transportation.

I think it would be cool to all meet up at something like the National Zoo... it's in the Adams Morgan area, easy to get to by the Metro red line for GWU, GT and USUHS. Not too sure about Howard (sorry, I'm not too familiar w/ that area, but I think you guys are close to the red line too). There are also lot of bars/restaraunts arund there and the zoo is always free, so it's a nice place to bring a blanket and have a picnic or study. If anyone ever wants to organize anything, please e-mail me... [email protected]. Anyway, I'm out for the weekend, take care everyone. 🙂

The Zoo, a great idea! I think its free too. 🙂 🙂

I second that emotion.

We have a place then? whadyall think?

I was thinking today that 'network' used to have a meaning before the internet anyways, and an intercity SDN meeting would reflect that old meaning nicely. ;-)

The zoo sounds great. Count me in.

Sorry about the double reponse that was an accident.

I love the National Zoo, and the Woodley Park area where it is located is also a nice, peaceful, get away from it all type of place. And yes, tne zoo is free, just like most of DC's attractions. I don't think I have ever done the picnic thing there, but I am sure that there are plenty spots for it. Great idea!

Hey everyone! I thought this was an awesome thread so I figured I'd bump it up and also see who's going to be in DC for sure this August and who is interested in a DC get together?? The zoo was a previous idea, but we can also do bar/resturant..let me know.

Howard is having major management problems. They play a significant role in the community (about the only facility in that area of town after General closed), and my buddies say that their time there has been very rewarding. But the PG residency programs stink. In fact, last week, ACGME just pulled accreditation on 2 programs (emerg med and peds), put about 8 programs on probation, and called the whole program management system "unfavorable." This has never happened to a facility--such a slam on the whole system. Let's cross our fingers for the patients; they are the ones who will suffer.

Hey future DCers,
I posted on another thread but it seems like more of us are checking this one....the zoo sounds like fun but it is sooooooooooooo hot and humid in DC in August that maybe getting together at a nice lounge/bar in Adams Morgan would be better. I grew up in DC and after 17 years of humidity and August heat, the zoo is pretty brutal in the summer. But honestly anything is fine...I'm just glad that people are down for a get-together. I'll call my girlfriends back in DC and get their advice on nice places to hang, but I'm guessing their going to say somewhere in Adams Morgan because that seems to be where the med students in DC hang out. It's a very nice area with lots of lounges, bars, etc. How about the first weekend in August?

I haven't posted in a while, but I was wondering if people going to the DC schools are still interested in a get-together? Is this plan still on, or have we all trashed the idea cuz the schools all start at different times...?

I'm still up for it. I'll be there on the 14th. Anyone free the 15th?
