I will be starting medical school in Howard this fall. Really excited about school but not so much about the area its in 😱

I have talked with a couple of doctors who graduated from Howard a while back and all of them strongly suggest against living in dorms (apparently graduate and undergraduate dorms are same and arn't very study-friendly).

I will apprecaite if any alumni/student/prospective-student/random-person can give me some suggestions on where I can rent a decent place for a decent price. I am hoping to have an apartment within 15 minute of school if possible.

Will love any input! 😍

The Cloister's is a gated community located next to the Washington Hospital, Children's Hospital National Medical Center, National Rehabilition Hospital and Veteran's Hospital campus area. It is about 5 minutes from Howard. The apartments have 1, 2 and 3 bedrooms which lend themselves nicely for sharing.

Look around and see if you can get a room in a group house in LeDroit Park. There are many old brownstones that have been refurbished into rooming houses that are great for medical students (and undergraduates for that matter). Try Craigslist and the Washington Post classifieds.

While the Shaw area does have some blighted housing, it is undergoing a nice rebirth. There are new condos going up and it's not any worse than other middle class areas of DC (or any large city). Security at most places is very good. Once you get to know the neighborhood, you realize that it's not nearly as depressed as it looks on first glance.

Outside the Shaw area and other areas that you might want to look into is Silver Spring (Georgian Towers) and SW Waterfront. Both areas are served by Metrorail and Metrobus so you won't need a car until third year.

I was going to ask you to PM NJBMD, the most popular HUCM alumni on SDN, but here she is already 😀
