I was accepted to both of these D-schools, but I cannot decide to which I should go. Howard tuition is about 80K less than Detroit, but school in Detroit is newer. Please tell me some of your opinions. Thanks. 🙂

P.S. I am not a minority student.

80k is significant. I'd go with less debt. DC has much more to offer as a city as well in your free time.

Soooo, you're gonna be the token white guy at Howard 😀 I say go with your gut. 80K is a lot of money. Look at the schools again if you need to. Talk to dentists from both schools. Look up info about the cities. Congrats on being accepted! You're gonna be a dentist. No greater feeling in the world than that 😀

Not sure if this helps but the state of Michigan has a fairly low cost of living. My cousin lives in Detroit and pays pretty cheap rent. Her husband is a law student there so he dosen't have much free time but she says that they still find things to do.

I wouldnt put too much weight on the newer facilities at UDM when making your decision. The school is moving to another location in Oct. 2007, so the clinics you saw at your interview won't be the clinics you will be using. Despite this, it is still a great school that has a lot going for it (in fact I'm still debating whether or not to accept their offer). I don't know anything about Howard, but the clincal experience you will get at UDM is among the best in the nation. I mean cmon, it IS in the ghetto of Detroit after all. Anyways, although there are many reasons to pick UDM, I'm just saying that the facilities shouldnt be the deciding factor.

Oh, and for things to do.....not much to do in Detroit, but if you venture north to the suburbs (Troy, West Bloomfield, Royal Oak, Auburn Hills), it's a really nice area. Plenty of places to shop, great restaurants, tons of bars especially in Royal Oak. And my personal favorite, you can even catch the Detroit Pistons roll through the NBA on their way to 70 wins and the 2006 NBA World Championship!!! 😉 But seriously though, if you're a big sports fan, Detroit is the place to be: professional franchises in all four major sports, big time college sports at Michigan and Michigan State (MSU is a bit longer of a drive than UofM), 2006 Super Bowl, 2009 Final Four....

Yea, I know you're a dental student and probably won't have time for all this 😱 , but at least it's nice to know it's there if you do happen to find some time...
