they will be interviewing into july i hear from an inside source.

I was told by current Howard students how slow the administration was last two years and that there have been no improvements.

I heard from them on the 2nd of April after waiting for 8 months.

Be patient.

Interviews will continue till late June.

I interviewed late March and from what I gathered last week my stuff just went to the committee. The committee meets every thursday, so i aim to call them on fridays or mondays. I will call this Friday or next monday to see if anything happened. The process is very slow. ANother girl (we both interviewed on the same date) had he file reviewed but then it had to go to the Dean for further decision (WTF?)....it will take forever.

Hang in there, everybody...

Howard is definitely slow...I applied there last year, interviewed in mid-May, and it took them about 3 months to tell me I was wait-listed. I don't understand what their problem is, but the times that i called they were extremely rude. If you have another school to go to, you might want to consider dropping them. I don't know why I applied this year, but I did...I still haven't gotten those stupid cards that they have you send with the recommendations! I don't even know if my file is complete, but when I called to ask they yelled at me!

The best thing to do with them is just wait. Keep calling. if they give you the same answer, then ask to speak to someone higher up. You really have to be pro-active with a lot of schools.

Good luck. :cool:

After waiting for a few months, I got a thick envelope which I took to be an interview request. It was my secondary application returned to me, untouched, along with my check! At that point I said, forget Howard, and threw the letter away. Last week I got a letter from Howard requesting an interview! It makes no sense. I can't imagine spending four years at a school that handles applicants like this.

But don't let me discourage anyone :D . This is just my personal experience.

smileyface,
Did you ever end up coming off of the waitlist? If so, when did you hear. If not, did you get accepted elsewhere?

Sorry, I can't remember who asked...I did not get off the wait-list. They never sent me anything after I was told I was on the wait-list.

I applied to schools again this year, and have gotten into 3 places. Howard is definitely not on my list, and as soon as my life is a little less crazy, I will withdraw my application from there. I really feel like they are a disgrace to the application process (it's bad enough as is!) but, on a more positive note, when I was there last year, our student presenter was very excited about the place and said she chose Howard over like 5 other schools! So who knows...maybe once you're in, they're a little better?

Although I agree Howard has some organization issues I feel the need to defend Howard. I interviewed in Mid February and received my acceptance less than five weeks later. You got to take the good with the bad. Yes the admssions office lost one of my LOR and yes they are slow to respond, these are some of the bad points. But the good much outweights the bad. You can count on one hand the number of schools as dedicated to URM students as Howard is. It really wants to train physicians to serve our community. It has one of the cheapest if not the cheapest private school tuition in the country at a little over $18,000/year. Great school in a great city. Just hang in there folks. I believe that they treat their students much better.

Medicine 2006,

Did you you do anything after your interview that helped you to get a response in less than 5 weeks? I really would like to go to Howard, but I'm afraid that if they wait to give me their decision until late this summer, I may already be committed to another program.

Any news anybody???????

Now I am on another waitlist at RWJ (UMDNJ) but I really want to go to Howard. Now if RWJ calls me next week, what should I do? ofcourse I will accept but how long should I hold on to my "dream" of going to a school (howard) that takes forever to accept/reject me? RWJ has an earlier start date than Howard I think.

mellow, where r u on the RWJ waitlist?

I am in a similar predictament. I will actually be enrolled already at a summer pre-matriculation program in another school when I probably finally hear from Howard, but if they want me, that is where I will go! :D

Is it really that hard to tally up how many students are declining their acceptance, and then remove the same number of people from the waitlist?

choisimd,
I will also be at a pre-matric program and am waitlisted at Howard. PM me to let me know what school you will be at.

Choisimd and Community,

About the premat program...I'm in the same boat at another school. Are you receiving stipends? If so, when Howard calls and you leave in the middle of the program will the schools be ok with that? Have you told these schools that you are still waiting for Howard?

i haven't heard squat from howard except an email from ann finney in late march with a letter from dean cannon as an attachment... did all you guys get that email too? i wonder if i'm just waiting for a rejection... so they're interviewing until late june? how do you guys know this? they discourage phone calls to their office?!

No, I am not receiving a stipend at all. I have to foot the bill. Also, I do not plan on telling the other school, especially since a waitlist position is not an acceptance.

I call them about once a week, usually on a friday because committee meetings are on thursdays. I've stopped calling once a week and pushed it back to once every 1 1/2 weeks since calling/emailing doesn't help.

I'm not receiving a stipend for the pre-matric program I will be at so I won't be financially liable to them until after I complete the program in the end of July. So until then I would be able to leave the program if say Howard accepts me, without paying any penalty. I checked with the dean to make sure. I just posed my question to the dean as a 'hypothetical' financial aid question, without mentioning the specific school that I am waiting to hear from.

Choisimd and Community,

What do you think I should do (since I'm getting a stipend)?

I posed this question to a counselor at UW and she told me that once you start the premat you are obligated to matriculate there since you are taking someone else's spot for the premat.
Thanks

Can someone please call howard and find out their status? I don't want to call because I am sure they know my name already.

They have a backlog they said, but how far back is this log backed up?

Community,

I sent you a PM. Sorry it took so long for me to reply. I am on vacation right now and haven't checked my email or SDN in almost 2 weeks.

When I called last week, I was told that the backlog was for several group of applicants.
Since we were about 16 during my interview my guess of the backlog ius about 30 unreviewed files

mellow-
i emailed you..
i just checked my status..
they are definitely sick of me calling! the lady didn't even have to tell me to hold on, she just said..you're still under review.
she mentioned that my file was with the dean.
hope this helps!

Why should it take 2 months to review 30 files (if that's an accurate number)? Not to mention their waitlisted people.....

I interviewed in late April.

They had interviews on alomost all the Tuesdays in April and since, they have been conducting other interviews.

I think that they select the highest priority applicants after the interview and just let the others in the general pool while continuing the process.

I have very little hopes for howard for I haven't heard a word.
To me, the class is already full and they are reviewing files as spots are opened.

I have lost hope and I am now applying to Grad after which I will take the MCAT again and apply for the second time

Good luck

This is the email i just received today from my interviewer:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi (******):
Yes, it takes a long time to get an answer from Howard. As a matter of fact, the interview process is taking place, even as I send you this e-mail.
I suppose that I can go and ask Ms. Finney about your status. I will be on the fifth floor tomorrow afternoon and I will drop by to see if she has any news. Take care.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

agghhhhh this is getting on my nerves....why are they interviewing now? Don't they know that they can't possibly have enough room to house all these students/applicants?

Mellow,

Hi there. It's terrible that you still haven't heard from them. I hope that you and the others get a response from Howard in a timely manner. Good luck everyone.

I guess that all we can really do is be patient and pray guys. This is definitely an annoying process in respect to the amount of time that everything takes, but what can we do about that? It is really out of our hands. If it is meant to be, then it will be. Good luck and God bless!!!

tick tock, tick tock.....still nothing (sigh)

Pretend we got an acceptance....

So are you guys staying on campus or are you getting your own place? My financial aid package wasn't that big so I might end up getting a part time job somewhere near by.

What date are you guys moving (to DC)? Since orientation is on the 18th or so (I have to look back in my acceptance letter) I might move a week earlier. After I get my place ofcourse.

NOOOOOOTTTTTTTTT :mad: :mad:

Believe me...I've already planned my move, my apartment, and orientation already. All I need now is a (bleep)in' acceptance letter. Come on give it to me already! :p

my bad....whoa! loss my composure for a sec. :D

my bad....whoa! loss my composure for a sec. :D •••••lol....you are my twin. If only they knew what we are going thru.
I even went on their website to see a sample of the course load for the first semester. I then researched (and made a list of)for the best books to study for each course (biochem, anatomy..etc).

While we are on the topic....where are you planning on moving to? the grad dorm or your own place? I heard conflicting things about the dorms so I want my own place (with roomies if needed). But rent is going to be tough....that's where my financial aid package comes into play.

Mellow, I check this thread everday to look for your acceptance. I have my fingers crossed for you!! Best of luck!

Mellow,

I've done the same thing....I even tried to start studying some of the old class notes, just to get a head start. I've completely lost it at this point. :p

Hopefully I plan on getting an apartment in or around DC. Don't have a clue where yet, but my cuz is down and knows the area pretty well, so she can help with that. I'll sleep on the street for the first week if I don't find an apartment in time...I just please ask to be accepted!!! AHHHHH!

GOOD LUCK to all of you. I know HOWARD is very slow with the app process. Last year two of my friends recieved their letter of acceptance in early August. After one interviewed in April and the other in July. KEEP HOPE ALIVE FELLOS.

Well,I guess that it is good news to know that people are accepted as late as August. I'm happy that we have this thread to keep our minds busy while we're waiting. Does anyone know how many students Howard accepts out of the number they interview?

YAWWWNNNNNNN....ohh...excuse me. It's been a long wait.

AGHHHHHHHH you know what I QUIT. I have HAD IT!!! No MORE FOR ME. I am DONE with HOWARD. If I get a call/letter from the adcom office for an acceptance, I am going to tell 'em to FORGETABOUTDIT. :mad:

This SHEEEAAAT has gone on long enough.

Mellow, I know how you feel. I sent a letter of rejection to them last week. I got tired of playing their stupid arsed game.

I have other places to be...

Mellow,

Did you call again this week?, are they still giving you the same routine?

BTW I pm'd you so respond when you get a chance..thanks!

I got the same back log story and was told to email the infamous "ms finney" who never replies her emails......this is making me very ill. I should sue them for emotional distress.

To make matters worse, this hottie I have been chasing for 3 yrs is finally trying to kick it to a sistah but he has to move to DC to start his internship...now I really want to go to DC....lol.

I am checking your PM choisimd.

Oh Mellow, then I believe you are destined to go to D.C. things will work out....just keep the faith girl!. Then when we finally get accepted...in (August) :mad: we can both go and have a nice talk with this "Ms. Finney"
