Hey guys,
Can anyone give me some insight about Howard? Any help would be awesome from those that have interviewed, visited, or just might know someone who attends. I am applying there with well above their average stats in regards to GPA. My MCAT is right at their average. I am caucasion. Will this help or hurt me? I was told they are trying to recruit white students but who knows. Thanks guys

Couldn't hurt to apply ... The most P.C. answer would be: "you will be considered an applicant irregardless of race ". But lets face it, in reality you will be fighting an uphill battle because you are white.

Just out of curiousity, I wonder what Howard's USMLE Step 1 pass rate is. All the schools I applied to list their pass rate somewhere on their website, but Howard's website doesn't seem to have that information.... interesting

Ehh, I used to think the same way you did man. However, after tallking to some people, I am starting to think different. Granted, they do favor African Americans but is it a possibility that many caucasions just don't apply there? Therefore, less tend to matriculate? I don't know, I am just throwing out some theories....lol 😀

Well my numbers right right up there with their averages, but I am a caucasian as well and still have no interview. I think they are definitely looking for a specific type of person, someone who perhaps did a lot of work in underrepresented areas, or has plans to do that after med school. I think they view other factors as being more important than grades and MCATs.

I have done both work with underserved and plan to do so afterward. I got a letter of recommendation from a caucasion alumni and he thinks I shouldn't have a problem. However, I am thinking he is being a little to over confident. It would be nice because I expressed my desire to work in public health with the underserved, etc. I guess we'll see! 😕

If I remember correctly, I think they said first time pass rates for Step 1 were about 80% - maybe it was a little more. And then Step 2 was like 97% or something. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong. But this is what I recall from the interview day.

While those numbers arn't anything to be excited about, I really think it depends on the kind of student you are. I could care less what their pass rates are as long as I pass!!

Bump.....anymore information? 🙂

Hi there,
Howard is NOT recruiting caucasian students. While generally 20% of the class may be caucasian, they are generally not recruited as a sizeable number of white applicants apply to Howard. Most white folks accepted come from New York, New Jersey, Texas or California i.e. states that have a sizeable African-American or Latino populations.

The biggest factor is getting accepted to Howard provided you have the grades and undergraduate GPA, is being able to excell within the Howard environment (read innercity, underserved African-American,Vietnamese and Latino patient population). You are likely to need more than an interest in working with the underserved but some tangible experience with the underserved such as teaching in an inner city school or working with Habitat for Humanity, voluteering with homeless organizations or drug rehab programs.

Where did you get all this information? Who knows, I feel I fit the bill but I doubt they'll see it that way.
