Hi everyone! Does anyone have advice on this - Im very interested in endo, a specially not offered by my HPSP branch. I am just looking at getting more information on possible service deferment until after specialty training. I know you have to apply for deferment and be accepted before residency applications.

I appreciate any incite - since I did not find much in the military dental forum!!

Army, AF, and Navy all have endodontists. Maybe your scholarship is through the new Space Force? It’s a known fact that gutta percha does not do well in a zero gravity environment.

But seriously, what you described will not happen. You must apply to your branch to be selected to receive specialty training just like everyone else - whether you are trying to do it through the military or delay your obligation. You will be competing against many qualified candidates who also have earned the chance to specialize by putting in active duty time. Aside from OMFS, do not expect to even have a realistic chance to specialize without AT LEAST 2-3 years of active duty service. Additionally, the military has their own endo residencies so they almost certainly will not be sending you to a civilian program. And, the military is reducing its number of specialists. Last I heard the Navy was planning to cut a quarter of its endodontist slots. Furthermore, getting into endo straight out of dental school, generally speaking, is very challenging. Programs almost universally expect some kind of practice experience beyond dental school.

What branch are you part of?
Endo is typically very difficult to get accepted into without some general dentistry experience after dental school.
If you are already HPSP I’d suggest a year or two general dentistry and apply in service. If you don’t get picked up, you’d have to wait to specialize till you separated.

Just anecdotal but a classmate of mine has been accepted into an Army Prosth residency right out of school.

A few years back someone in the Navy was accepted right into endo. The catch was before dental school they spent 8 years as a USMC fighter pilot.

Couple years back someone from my school did the same but for the army, definitely the exception...pretty sure he was #1 in his class and was extremely competitive

The list came out today:

Check out the comment above for the Navy’s last round of specialty training results. How many ENS and OC selectees do you see on there? Those are the ones that got in right out of school. All those LTs have at least some active duty time, LCDRs have 5+ years, and CDRs 10+. And, I bet many of the OCs had prior active duty service before dental school.
