HS extra-curriculars in AMCAS

Medical schools want to see what you've been doing since you graduated high school. The only time you really should list an EC from high school is if you continued that given activity into college. Good luck!

I agree with this. I put down that I had been working in a nursing home (summers only) and as a black belt instructor since 2001 and as a student since 1994. The karate actually turned out to be a major part of my PS. I would only put down HS activities if it is something you have shown not only consistent dedication but significant leadership into it as well.

Eh, I've always been told to put down things like eagle scout rank so I'm going to put that down on my app. I've seen people use it as 30 or 40 year olds. Also, OSU's class profile for 2006(I think it was 2006, maybe 2005...) actually listed the number of eagle scouts entering. Earned it in high school but I guess it's still considered use-ble afterward. Don't put down stupid stuff like key club, honor society, or student government. I doubt the adcom will care...

Agree with the above. Put it if it's something that you've continued to do, or is very related to your health experience or a big part of why you are applying.

Ex: I went to a 4 yr medical magnet program at my high school so I obviously put that.

We (myself, LizzyM, and a few others) recently had a discussion about whether or not listing Eagle helps or not. I listed it, but only in the description of my activity as an Assistant Scoutmaster. Even then, there are those who will love it and those who may not care to see it.

The activity section on AMCAS explicitly says Post-secondary extra-curriculars. I would be very careful about things you choose to list.

Personally, I think if its relevant, why not include it? It's not like the adcoms are going to lay down the hammer simply because you included positive high schools activities/experiences. If you would include it on your CV, you should probably include it on your application.

They might think you can't follow instructions though.

And there really isn't much a person should be including from high school on their CV either.

Ditto. I did the same thing on my app; listed assistant scoutmaster (which I did for a while after high school) and in this description mentioned myself being an Eagle.

It actually came up with at least one of my interviewers (who was also an eagle). But as said, it can go either way.

Because:

A) The AMCAS specifically asks for only post-secondary activities to be listed

B) Even if you do list something from HS, most adcom members will frown upon it; it will actually end up hurting you more than it helps. Unless it had some very direct relevance to an EC that you did post-secondary, it shouldn't be listed.

Throughout your training, you are going to find that you are only as good as the last place you have been. The same applies when you enter the match process, for the most part residency directors don't care what you did in college. There are only a few exceptions.

Zipmedic, could I list eagle scout in the pretense that I did philmont the summer between freshman year of college and my senior year of high school? If it makes a difference I took college classes as a senior in high school at marshall university, a 4 year college? So, can I list it because I was already taking college classes? Eh... Confusing.. I just want your opinion on what you would do?

High-school no count grasshopper.
