I disagree with the answer to this question so can someone confirm/reject what I say here? Thank you.

#3: For which of the following compounds will hydrogen bonding among its molecules be important?
I. CHCl3
II. CH3CH2OH
III. H3C-O-CH3
A. II only
B. III only
C. I and II only
D. II and III only

Obviously, II is true. But, I also thought that III is true because it can be hydrogen acceptor (as opposed to II as a donor). Now, I now read that the question said "among its molecules" so is that why the answer is A, not D?
 
H bonding can only occur with -NH, -OH, or HF. Since III doesn't have one of those, can't really hydrogen bond. For II, the -OH can H bond with the lone pairs on oxygen. I hope that helps!

Sorry to hi-jack the thread here,

but then why do ketones and aldehydes get to H-Bond? C=O, the O is not attached to O, N, or F.
 
ketones and aldehydes cannot H-bond with itself. they can H-bond with water. The OH group of water can H-bond to the oxygen atom of a ketone.

By the same virtue, could we say that for ethers, they can't hydrogen bond with other ethers, but they can accept a hydrogen bond from the H on Water?
