hygienist exam in florida

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
hi can i know the deadline to apply to the exam?

I was thinking about that too but I can't afford the application form right now since I know we have to pay USD700 by this month which is the deadline for submission of applications for the July clinical exam.

So I am thinking of waiting till the middle of this year and then I'll probably go for the Dec. exam instead.

Have you researched if the other requirements like the HIV and domestic violence certificates etc... can they be done online?

Keep me posted on your plans so I too can be guided accordingly.

hello mommyr, toothlord
the deadline is not feb end its april 1st. i checked the appliacation twice it says so on the very 1st page in the first paragraph. I know few dentists in tampa, florida i still need to speak to them about this requirements(hiv, domestic violence) as to where we can do those courses. will post here as soon as i get to know.

Can any one can highlighten us about the dental hyginist stats in USA.
Will be greatful

All the best

You should ask the dental board if you're allowed to do them online. I had to do some before, here are some links I still have saved in my computer:
http://www.continuingeducation.com/dentalpro/
http://www.dentalxchange.com/ce/ce.jsp
http://store.yahoo.com/dentaldidactics/index.html
http://www.dentrek.com/
http://www.worldwidelearn.com/continuing-education/dentists-cde.htm
http://www.fice.com/index.html
http://www.homesteadschools.com/Dental/

But before you pay for anything make sure the course is approved by the Florida board, otherwise you may be taking a risk.

you're right i scanned through the application form and the deadline for submission of pages 1-3 is April and the rest is May. The accredited sources for certificate training is also posted on the application form which seemed to include home study so I guess it is possible to do them online but to be safe it's best to call. If I can do that from Canada that's better except the written exam for the jurisprudence of course.

But again, money is a big issue for me but I'm thinking perhaps I should give this hygiene thing more serious thought bec. it may enable me down the road to finace my attempts at being recertified as dentist whether through the bench test or going back to school.

I am just a bit hesitant bec. I am living in the red already and there's no guarantee of sponsorship for a work visa should I pass.

Hmmm....have you calculated how much everything for Florida will cost in terms of competion of the certificates, jurisprudence exam and the 700 application fee?🙄

my opinion is that this exam is so great and usefull for permanent resident in florida or anyplace in the us,because you will be able to work and get paid higher than a dental assistant and be able to finance your future school funds,at the same time its not usefull for someone who is seeking work visa becasue its not that guaranteed, but sure it doesent hurt to try.

are you suggesting bec. I am a canadian resident it would be wise for me to hold off applying?

Hello
getting a job as a dental hygienist should not be a problem in florida. I just searched for them at yahoo and found lots of openings. pay is also pretty decent at 30-40$ per hour and sometimes higher than that.

Have you guys confirmed that the Dental Hygienist positon qualifies for a work visa? for a H1B?. Mommyr, you should really verify that before you go ahead and spend your money. And since you're a Canadian resident you should try explore what possible options you may have in this regard, like other types of visa easier and cheaper to obtain. Just a thought....

i am interesteed in hygienist practise in florida, well i will be in florida next week on visit, well is it worth giving it a try for people who dont have status in usa....i have done NBDE part 1 with 80 %score.. how hard is the exams and clinicals....

i agree with that although nobody asked my opinion..😀

thank you very much meggs for your empathy... i notice you have so many helpful inputs for everybody ... you just have a big heart i guess and would like everyone to suceed

i am going to do more research before i commit to anything esp. bec. i really can't afford to make expensive mistakes...
i appreciate your helpful insights ,thanks again

i am also planning to go for this exam but have littlebit confusion.
could anybody solve this confusion?

is this true that after getting license u can't practice in other states except florida and is florida dental board going to close this exam for people like us?

thanx in advance.

As long as it's a realistic opinion, you can stick your nose anytime. 😉

Mommyr,

Exactly becuase I know you can't afford to loose money is that advice you to find out about the work visa before hand.

I've said this is some other thread in the past, but according to a very superficial research I did, in order to qualify for a H1B visa the job position needs to have a Bachelors degree in order to perform it. And Dental Hygienist don't have a Bachelors degree (expect teachers and researchers). So adding 2+2 together, it just didn't add up for me at the time. But, as I said, it was a very superficial information, no inmigration expert or anything.

That's why I keep saying, do your homework first, before you spend money, time and energy!

"I am a canadian resident it would be wise for me to hold off applying?"

If I can ask you, Mommyr, why are you thinking about coming to the US if you are a canadian resident? Are there no opportunities to practice in Canada?

the weather is terrible of course and most canadians would agree with me, last sunday it was minus 28 with the wind chill and a few weeks ago it was minus 30...

it's just been very discouraging also trying to get recertified here... there are only 5 schools with the qualifying program for foreign dentist and the slots are extremely competitive...ask sam3 about his experiences here and you'll get an idea what i am talking about...

it's just easier in the US...and since i cleared NDBE 1 and 2 and I am waiting for the bench i am looking forward to a chance of just taking the exam without going back to school

furthermore all these attempts have cost me so much i can't even begin to tell you how hard it is just to make my credit card payments every month while working as a dental assistant that's why i was considering doing hygiene in florida which pays more and doens't entail going back to school to do hygiene...

again bec. of visa issues and bec. hygiene is not really where my heart is it is just one of the options i am considering...

i am waiting for the bench exam still and although i would like to rewrite the canadian EE test so i can be more competitive to go back to school i simply can't afford it right now, resource and time wise since i am also someone's mom and wife...

so that's the story of my life!😉

Hello to all
what are the pre requisties for apearing in dental hygienist exams
i mean any courses or any classes have you taken before appearing for exams
What are rules for foreign graduated dentists and any idea about newyork state
Thanks

hey mommyr,

Have you look into pharmaceutical company representative? I know this has been a backup plan for people in the past. And it sure pays better than dental assisting. You know working for dental manufacturers companies, medicines companies, etc... visiting dentist and getting them to either buy products from you or either getting them to prescribe your products to patients.

I have no idea about requirements or anything else as a matter of fact. But it will sure work out better for temporary option, than dental assisting. There's just one major drawback, you'll have to speak very good english, the clearer the better.

i dont know about canada bu pharmaceutical companies are the same everywhere,i tried my best to get a job as a medical or a dental representative,i had a good connection too because its hard to get through such companies since the pay well and its a highly compettive position, none of them even bother themselves to look at my resume with all the connection stuff, they prefer pharmacist or assistant pharmacist than dentist, and they prefer that have a good experience which is something i dont have,no discouragement but its hard to get really.

In which state did you tried toothlord? Sorry to hear about your experience.

thanks for the advice meggs, i might look into that in the meantime... believe me my husband and i have done so many creative stunts just to make ends meet it's funny and incredulous sometimes....

tomorrow my daughter and i have an appointment with a modelling agency for print ads, i used to do commercials back home while in dental school to pay for my studies...so we'll see if that gets us extra money to pay for bills😉

in the meantime my husband asked me to forget everything else (other options like florida or getting into a school) and concentrate on preparing for the bench...i guess bec. i have so much on my plate and he wants me to relax and stay focused on one thing at a time plus we can't afford anything else anyway...

Hello everyone
Thanks meggs for your input. There are people who have got H1 visa as dental assistants, so I don't see any reason why a dental hygienist shouldn't get one. Anyways i am trying to find out more about this and will post any updates. If anyone else has anything to say on this subject please do reply.
thanks

:wow: Are you sure about this???? There are some other types of work visas, but they are even harder to get. But, if you can find any info on that share it with us please.

oh really? well i am still undecided about taking the exam in florida bec. of money issues and now that it seems they're going to hold a bench exam this year i will be focusing my energy on that i guess,

by the way i went to the modelling agency a few hours ago and they offered my daughter a print ad job for a supermarket here named Loblaws for $600 for 2 hours but i had to refuse bec. I am working full day on Monday and can't bring her:laugh:

Hi you all,

I am curious about how you guys are preparing for part3.
Please list materials, review classes, how many prep/ per week...Anything can help, I am kinda of lost and do not know where to start.

Typical Dental Hygiene programs DO NOT award a Bachelors degree. Some specific ones do, but usually for those who'll go into teaching or research. So the typical classified add hygienist isn't required a Bachelors degree or higher, as stated in that website you posted.

ni oletyrags,
i am planning to take florida hygiene licence in july.did you know anybody offering classes for the licencing exam?(CLINICAL TRAINING).
if anybody knows more about the clinical training classes for the hygiene licenece please respond
honest

Hi, In the information booklet that comes with the application forms says: A SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER ISSUED BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IS REQUIRED FOR LICENSURE.
So, I assume that only those with a valid visa or legal status can apply....

Hi all
Requirement for H1 visa states that the job should require specialised skills. dental hygienist job does require special skill unlike dental assistant job which is classified under unskilled labour.

Hello
I heard that they were giving H1 visa for dental hygienist previously but after few visas they decided that it doesn't qualify for a visa. So i am not sure if I will b applying for the exam.
