Circle important passages/keywords/etc. Make notes on the paper when reading it. I noticed that I lost a lot of time on the practice test because i kept having to look back to find things like names.

Spang I have a problem with that post for one reason, some passages, albeit very difficult to read have very simple questions while other passages seemingly simpler have very difficult questions. By judging what the entire passage/questions will be like just on the passage alone is a very bad mistake to make.

nutmeg, do you mean reading lots of passages or general stuff (like journal articles)?

Ouch!! I just to the first EK verbal test and got a 6!! It seems so hard, there always seems to be at least 2 right answers. Anyone work through this book and see improvement? I am going to try and do one of the tests each week.

General nonfiction, particularly with opposing viewpoints. I used Bell Curve vs Mismeasure of Man and Troubled Waters over Evolution vs Climbing Mt Improbable (though I'd now recommend Darwin's Black Box in lieu of Troubled Waters).

If you can read opposing viewpoints, and focus on understanding both sides regardless of whom you agree with, you will do well. Moreover, many of the passages I encountered were on subjects with which I had been acquainted through reading--such as astronomy, memetics, the Dada art movement, etc. If you are well read, you will have a better chance of doing well on understanding passages.

amox, you are getting all kinds of well-intentioned but bogus advice that is contradictory and is probably not going to do you much good (e.g. circling keywords). The EK strategy works, but it takes practice.

Since you invested the $ in EK, go on over to their web site and get their advice on how to use their materials. They will be more than happy to provide quick, helpful advice.

I found that I didn't do very well on the EK tests until I had read all their strategies. It really was the third lecture that helped me pull it all together - getting the main idea of the passage and not obsessing over details. Don't get too frustrated until you've gone through the whole book - it takes practice!
